Cpap for 1+ years latley been taking off mask in sleep

Post by bmfmancini » Fri Jun 17, 2016 8:37 am

Hey Guys ,

I have been using my Cpap for over 1 year now and ive been pretty compliant

but lately I have woken up to find that I have taken my mask off and not only taken it off but put it back on my night table sometimes or its just on my bed
I used to do this when I first got my machine then stopped that and used to sleep through the whole night no problems

There are nights I sleep through the whole night no problems then for a few days im taking it off

Any ideas or suggestions ?
Have a great day !

Hi, there are so many possible reasons for what's happening but without any more info than you gave it's hard to guess. Have you (slowly perhaps) gained any weight in recent months? Changed your sleep schedule? Began drinking alcohol close to bedtime or started new meds?

Download Sleepyhead software and then post reports on Imgur.com, leaving a link to those in this thread. Then we can get an idea of what might be going on.

Thanks for the response

I have actually lost weight in the past couple of months woohoo

I have not started any new medications
I dont drink alcahol
My sleep schedule is pretty routine it fluctuates but not by much

I have a resmed s10 and I checked myair and I do see that its showing my mask fit as good but I see the leak rate at 20 which I think i high

I will try to sleepy head software and see what else I can find
Have a great day !

Good idea, my air is junk. Losing weight could mean that your mask fit isn't so hot any more - you might want to look into the Padacheek liners.

The leak number from MyAir is a 95% number when means you were at OR BELOW that leak number for 95% of the night. The other 5 % you are over that number...no way to know how far over unless you see the software detailed reports.

ResMed's line in the sand for the beginning of large leak territory is 24 L/min. Up to that 24L/min amount of excess leak (which is what your machine reports) they say that they can well compensate for those excess leaks.
Once leaks go into large leak territory it starts affecting the machines ability to sense and record events and respond to them if using APAP mode. It's a gradual worsening though...it's not like things are totally in the toilet if you hit 29 L/min it just starts getting a bit iffy. From my own personal experience I found that the machine was still accurate up to 30 L/min and between 30 and 35 L/min things started getting iffy and I started seeing some unknown apnea flags which means the machine could tell something was going on but could not tell what it was.
Over 35 L/min and the machine is pretty clueless and is likely miss any events that might happen.
So while a 95 % leak number of 20 L/min seems a bit high...it's still within the range where the machine can compensate for the leak and the data it reports is going to be accurate. The further you go over 30 though...the iffier it gets.

Now if someone has massive leaks but they only last 5 or 10 minutes then that's not the end of the world as long as they don't wake someone up.

So that 20 L/min leak number is still within acceptable limits and unless it is waking up often there's no urgent need to try to reduce it.

Thanks for the Help

I checked the sleepyhead software and I am seeing some heavy leaks

I am going to try and adjust my mask to see if that makes a difference
I hate waking up without my mask on
Have a great day !
