Sleep Apnoea links to Menopause

Post by ajtaylor72au » Tue Jun 07, 2016 4:12 am

Interesting to read about possible links between menopause and sleep apnoea in women - I was recently diagnosed with severe OSA , and in my second year of surgical menopause - I wondered if any ladies had any experience of this and how you are getting on with what feels like a snowball effect of health issues ..thank you

After surgical menopause, I was on oral estrogen for several years, resulting in never, ever having a "hot flash".
I have no idea if it had any effect on my apnea, but I felt AMAZING, compared to before my hysterectomy.
Eventual cessation of the estrogen had no noticeable effect, but it was probably well-timed, as last year, my
breast cancer diagnosis was very highly positive for both estrogen and progesterone, and tumor growth was nil,
probably due to very low levels of these hormones.

It's been a few years so I can't cite the data anymore. But I remember reading that when estrogen levels drop we are more prone to sleep apena. The one reference said that when the factory shuts done, the windows don't need to be open any longer Something about estrogen helping us to stay oxygenated to support pregnancy, so it kept the muscle tone in our throats tighter.

Interesting; but since I am more than just a vessel for the next generation, I shall continue to use my Autoset.

my doc told me after menopause the lack of hormones can cause the tissue to be flabbier, collapsing the airway. I really think that my sleep apnea came on after menopause and I only just discovered it several years later.
