20+yrs with OSA, first night with cpap

Post by nepatitan » Sat May 07, 2016 6:34 am

hey all, I've been lurking around here since February of 2016.
Long story short, was diagnosed with OSI when I was 16 years old, never did anything about it. Getting older (37) and realized that my body felt twice the age it was.
Got rechecked in March of this year, AHI of 56.3, being older and more mature I knew I needed to do this!
Went back for a second test with cpap on April 12th, it was nothing like I had experienced 20 years prior. Was very comfortable, not tossing and turning all night. The headstrap for the mask was a medium and needed a large so there was some air leaking around my eyes. Woke up in the morning, felt, ehhh not to to bad. The next day I realized how good I felt from the night before. Picked up my machine (resmed auto a-flex) last night, went over all the basic info with the nurse (was VERY excited to get home and use it) I was kinda procrastinated going to sleep last night as I thought "it cant be this easy"!!! Finally got into bed around 1:30, hooked up my Darth Vader (what my significant other calls it) and did my best "Luke I am your father". I remember waking up once and hitting the ramp button. Other than that the next thing I remember is looking at my alarm clock, its 6:47 AM and I'm ready to get up.... wait....WHAT! I sleep 5 hours 36 minutes and feel more rested than sleeping (I thought) from 11pm to 8am. I take my mask off, turn the machine off, hop out of bed... wait, my back isn't killing me? No strain walking to the shower. I'm thinking okay maybe this is just in my head? Get out of the shower and totally giddy to get the memory card and check my stats from the night. I come downstairs, its still raining and cloudy out (have not seen the sunlight or blue sky for 4 days) yet I dont feel like a truck hit my and then backed over my face just for good measure. Checked my stats, AHI was 1.97 over 5hrs 36mins, totally psyched! Wishing I wasn't such a stubborn kid.

TLDR : Sleep apnea 20+ yrs, first night with cpap I feel F*?++*NG GREAT!

I love to hear such a success story so early on in treatment. Wish I had gone in at 37 instead of 52. But such is life. I am feeling the best I have since my 20's after optimizing my therapy. Sounds like they got your settings in the ballpark on the first try, and that is a great thing.

Thanks Mudrock63!
If I hadn't experienced feeling great after my second test with the cpap in April I would have woke up and thought I was crazy lol.
