Using a hose cover on a heated hose.
Using a hose cover on a heated hose.
I'm going to be getting my new APAP machine hopefully this Monday and it looks like I'll finally get a heated hose.
I wouldn't think that a heated hose would ever pose a risk if combined with a fleece hose cover. But just encase I'm missing something obvious does anyone know if it's not recommended to use a hose cover with a heated hose?
I know I won't need the cover for temp reasons but having the cover still makes the hose quieter and it's a lot less noisy and less attractive to our cats when it's covered up. Plus I like it better when it's covered - makes it feel less hospital like.
I plan on making my own covers but have one of the snuggle hose covers I've used for years.

I use a hose cover on my Hibernite hose which gets considerable warmer than the standard heated hose from Respironics.
No problems at all.

I use a hose cover with my ResMed Machine's heated hose, not a problem......in the winter it's needed for rain out but now it just nicer to sleep with.

Re: Using a hose cover on a heated hose.
the hose has a thermostat in the end of it, so that it uses just enough electricity to maintain the desired temp, putting a hose cover on will, just like insulating your hose, or water heater, just reduce the energy needed to keep the thing at a set temperature.Gryphon wrote:I'm going to be getting my new APAP machine hopefully this Monday and it looks like I'll finally get a heated hose.

Re: Using a hose cover on a heated hose.
Sounds good to me. I had heard that it would get too hot and etc etc etc. but I got to thinking what if it got under the covers or something it has to be safe. But I thought I'd get some opinions from the source. Other people who already do it or would know better from experience. Thanks for all the replies.

I use a cover on my hose to keep it quiet. I run my hose up over the headboard of the bed, and the cover muffles any sound the hose would make when I move it on the headboard.

that's one of the other major reasons I like it - I always ran mine over the headboard and it used to rattle like mad when the little ribs would bump across the headboard - drove me crazy - hose cover stopped all that.

Re: Using a hose cover on a heated hose.
Resmed sells their own cover, which they say is the "only one which can be used" with their heated hoses.
Using another annoys them, and cuts into their profit.

I feed humidified oxygen into the heated hose connector w/hose covered with what I call the sock. No overheating problems I'm aware of. ResMed will probably void my warranty for breaking their law.

DITTO... but only for the cooler months here in California. Otherwise the therapy air just gets too warm.JDS74 wrote:I use a hose cover on my Hibernite hose which gets considerable warmer than the standard heated hose from Respironics.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

The warranty on the hose is quite short; and as good as useless.

Same here! I'll have to try it with my heated hose. I read somewhere not to put a hose cover on a heated hose, but I still get rainout with the heat on. Maybe this will help.Gryphon wrote:that's one of the other major reasons I like it - I always ran mine over the headboard and it used to rattle like mad when the little ribs would bump across the headboard - drove me crazy - hose cover stopped all that.
Re: Using a hose cover on a heated hose.
You may be experiencing rain out at the mask level because the air in the mask cools down to a point to cause condensation because the air in the mask has both the incoming humidified air and also the air that you exhale in it and the air you exhale also has moisture in it. ....So between the 2 sources the air in the mask is cooling to a point of condensation despite having a heated hose being used.Portlandguy wrote:Same here! This seems to be especially true when a mask that has a short hose goes along with the mask...like some of the nasal pillow masks. The warm hose air starts cooling down as soon as it leaves the heated hose and if the bedroom is cool enough by the time it gets to the mask it's cooled to a point where condensation can happen.
For this reason some people use a little hose cozy on the short hose too.
Or if using nasal pillows...a little barrel cozy to help keep the air in the nasal pillows warm enough to not release the moisture.
So there are additional options available should a hose cover on a heated hose not do the trick.
I use a heated hose and sometimes even with a hose cover on it I will have some condensation in the nasal pillows. Mainly in the winter when the bedroom is a lot colder. So I use a barrel cozy (found at padacheek.com) to help prevent the condensation in the mask (doesn't happen in the hose) in the winter...plus it feels nice against the skin.
