Masks for heavy mouth breathers??

Post by AnnaS » Thu Apr 21, 2016 9:13 am

Hi all,

I currently use a full face mask (details below) but my mouth seems to still open and fall below the mask sometimes so I am sort of hanging half in/ half out. Consequently I am drying out my mouth.. are there good full face masks that you would recommend that cover the nose and mouth well besides the one I am currently using?

Please advise,
Thanks
AnnaS

Innomed Hybrid has a chin flap which catches that.

Otherwise use a chin strap or rig something that connect to the straps and hold your jaw in place.

Sounds like your mask is too small. Try a larger size. Have you looked at this?

Not necessarily. I have the same issue. It is not a size thing but gravity.

I was thinking the same thing. I have the same mask, only the one for men, and it fits so much better that the Quattro FX FFM I had. Way too many leaks with that previous mask.

If you wear a soft cervical collar at night it will keep your head up, airway more open and mouth more closed... many members use one.

Thanks for your responses. Rally appreciate the great feedback and ideas. I used to have the full face for me but found that the rush of air across my cheeks and eyes was too much to sleep through...plus the contours of my face did not sit the mask well so I opted for the smaller mask with some of my mouth now opening below it. I seem to have an irregular face for masks, I guess.

Where can I find information on the collar?

In the meantime, I will try the chin strap to see if that helps.

Very grateful for this forum!

AnnaS

A solution or at least a partial solution is what is called a soft cervical collar. I got mine from Amazon.
It supports the jaw as the muscles relax with sleep.

Here is one that works.
http://www.amazon.com/Carex-Health-Bran ... cal+collar

A problem with FFM and chin straps is the tendency of the chin strap to pull back on the jaw just a little and increase the likelihood of having obstructive events. The collar just supports from below.

If you go to a local supplier, the collars available will be stiffer than the ones from Amazon but they will work as well and will be available today.

Cheers

I just posted about the one I use here --> viewtopic.php?f=1&t=111600

JDS - This is a cheaper brand if you pick it up at Walmart. The models marked "Firm" work a little better for me than the Carex. I recently switched and have been wearing a DMI for about two months. Looks like the cell structure gradually breaks down, and they need replacing about once a quarter. Still, a cheap, comfortable solution.

I had the same problem with my F10 and switched to Quattro Air and getting much better results and way fewer leaks. I used to wake up with the bottom of the F10 in my mouth.

I wished I could say that about the Quattro Air I bought 3 weeks ago.

Very light and quite comfortable but my Mask Fit % on DreamStation Auto BiPAP was very low, way too much leaking although I never noticed the leaks.

$110 wasted.

I used RemZzzs liners too.

I had to return to my Amara View which isn't as comfortable but the leaks are reduced and my AHI is around 7, although I need to get it lower.

I would like to try Innomed RespCare a Hybrid though.

F&P Simplus full-face mask is my favorite mask by far. I always woke up to farting noises with the airfit f10.

You could try a Quattro Pro by Resprionics, if is a full face mask but small. The problem I have with it is I can only sleep on my back, if I try the sides the seal breaks and it whistles waking my wife up. I hate sleeping on my back, that coupled with chronic insomnia gives me a max of 4 hours of sleep a night. If you are look for something small that is is still a full face mask you may want to try this, you may have better luck than I, Good luck!
