Leaking mask with pressure change

Post by Miscanthus » Sat Apr 16, 2016 9:48 am

With the great advice from this forum I made some changes to the pressure settings on my machine. This was to try and bring down my AHI's. The changes seemed to help with that but the increased pressures have started giving me mask leaks around the eyes and mouth all through the night. I cannot sleep. I tried a new Mirage Quatro the past few nights and it still leaks. I am at my wits end with this stuff. Any advice from here?
Thanks a bunch,
Roy

Have you tried Padacheek.com liners - they help with leaks and mask 'marks'. I also wonder if you'd try a soft cervical collar that keeps your head off your chest when sleeping, opening up your airway better and keeping your jaw, if not lips, closed.

Full face masks need to be properly sized......and, if you're using a range of pressures......adjusted to the highest pressure it may reach.

Any tips on "adjusting" the mask to high pressures?

Yep.
You're going to need to change your APAP settings to straight pressure (CPAP) and then set it to the highest pressure you're going to encounter.......and test it. Then, you can put it back into the range of pressures you were using and see if it works.
Too often, people tighten their masks too tight and that causes leakage. The mask needs to "float" on the face so the cushions/seals fit firmly against the face when inflated.
Another problem with mask leaks is the bed pillow. If the user is using a bed pillow that allows the head to sink in too deeply, it can push the mask out of alignment. Standard fiberfill pillows are not necessarily ideal for this therapy. Go up to the Search line and look up "buckwheat" or "Chiroflow" and you will find many discussions on bed pillows.

And, read this by our forum member "Janknitz":
