elect. goes out so does CPAP

Post by RobertinTX » Thu Mar 17, 2016 10:41 am

Last night the electricty went out at midnight and didn't come back on until 6:15 AM.
I can't sleep without my CPAP so i just got up, turned the emergency light on and messed around.
When the elect. came back on i went back to bed and woke up at 9 AM.
Does going without your CPAP affect everyone this way ?
This has happened several times in the past and the next day i feel like crap.
Is this normal or just me ?
Thanks

I just hate when that happens. I get such a headache that I would have to call in sick if I were still working.

This can happen a lot in Florida during storm season. I have found that I can sleep ok in a recliner, using pillows to keep head erect. Luckily I do not move much when sleeping...this helps when sleeping in a recliner.

Love to hear other responses.

APC, the backup people, would not advise me when I asked them what power back up might be useful. They don't recommend any units for medical devices...liability issues.

Have you talked to your power company? Some might provide a generator.

Maybe for a ventilator . . .
Our power company just says to go somewhere else, meaning a hotel.

In the search box above type in:

battery backup

There's a lot of info presented and lots of options. It's not too expensive considering how crappy you feel after no CPAP. That's a not too common machine you've got there... might add a additional layer of concern finding the right power backup. Maybe some other users with that machine can chime in.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

I talked to my electric coop and they said if i wanted a generator to go buy one.
They said they are not in the market for selling generators.

I absolutely hate when that happens...happened to me last night as well. Luckily, it was 10 minutes or less and it was back on. I cannot sleep without my machine, even to nap.

In varying degrees, that has happened to me, too. Always got in (at least) my minimum of 4 hours.......either before or after the power outages. A couple of years ago, I bought a couple of battery backup surge protectors......one Cyber Power and one APC......from Walmart. Quite affordable and will be enough to buffer the outage to allow me to shut my machine off rather than just dropping power. One of the reasons behind this was that on a couple of nights, the power went out after several hours and the meters (blower and user) on the machine lost those hours. So, not wanting to have it happen yet again, I decided on the battery backup UPS devices. Normally, we've had pretty stable power in our area, but the instances mentioned were caused by transformers blowing in our neighborhood.

In each instance, I managed to get my minimum or more sleep time, so it wasn't a big deal......just an annoyance.

Once when I forgot my cpap in the airport shuttle and it was too late to call or go to the office to get it, I decided there was nothing to do but get whatever sleep I could without it. I slept much better than I expected to, but certainly not as well as I would have.

Worrying about whether you'll get any sleep or deciding that you can't sleep without it is counterproductive, which is why I just went to bed without it knowing there wasn't anything I could do about the situation until morning. We never know until we try if we'll be able to sleep or not.

Hey Robert, this past Friday when the little front came through Corpus it knocked out our power...
I figured it would come back in a short so I got up and sit in my recliner, could not sleep without CPAP. Put on my mask trying to fool my brain...haha. That didnt work either. Power off from 11:30 to around 4am. As soon as power came back I donned my mask and went right to sleep waking up around 7 feeling very good actually. Coffee and breakfast as usual. Point is I found out I cannot sleep without it...

I can fall asleep without my machine, but I invariably awaken,
feeling like I've just spent the night inside Ronda Rousey's heavy bag.

I spent one night without my CPAP due to a power outage. I felt like crap the whole next day.

The next day I researched and put together a deep-cycle battery assembly for when the power goes out.

As other have stated, search the forum for "battery backup" and you can put together an set up that will last for a few hours/days.

My CPAP machine runs on direct current. A transformer converts the 120 VAC to 12 VDC. If your machine is also DC and you always wake up you could hook up DC batteries of the proper voltage to your CPAP. Check with your CPAP vendor to see if they have an adapter for outdoor camping. Also check with your local electronic supply co. Realize that humidifiers are going to require a larger capacity battery.
