Credentials are what the doctor did for himself in the past. Effectiveness is what the doctor does for you today. Some doctors who have a lot of the former, don't feel moved to do any of the latter.

as was mentioned, standard sleep cycles are about 1.5 hours long.racprops wrote:You need at least a three hour sleep cycle to get a real rest.

Thanks for all of your advice! After reading the reviews CPAP.COM and your help I have decided to go for the Resmed S10.
Thanks Robbie

Re: My Compair of The DreamStation VS the ResMed S10
OK I do remember reading you need a three hour sleep cycle, BUT I was not so far off:
From:
http://healthysleep.med.harvard.edu/hea ... s-rem-nrem
"NREM sleep and REM sleep continue to alternate through the night in a cyclical fashion. Most slow-wave NREM sleep occurs in the first part of the night; REM sleep episodes, the first of which may last only one to five minutes, generally become longer through the night. During a typical night, N3 sleep occupies less time in the second cycle than the first and may disappear altogether from later cycles. The average length of the first NREM-REM sleep cycle is between 70 and 100 minutes; the average length of the second and later cycles is about 90 to 120 minutes. The reason for such a specific cycling pattern of NREM and REM sleep across the night is unknown. Some scientists speculate that specific sequences of NREM and REM sleep optimize both physical and mental recuperation as well as some aspects of memory consolidation that occur during sleep, but this has not been confirmed."
Note the second sleep cycle, "the average length of the second and later cycles is about 90 to 120 minutes."
That is two hours, and I might find a report of three hours if i look harder.

be sure and go for the "AirSense 10 Autoset for Her" (not s10... that's a small pickup truck by Chevy)Ronberta wrote:Resmed S10.

the "for her" has an extra mode, which might, or might not be handy to have sometime in the future, but it never hurts to have it available.Ronberta wrote:Thanks, I am definitely not after a small pickup truck I will however order the"Airsense 10 Autoset" but not for her

Re: My Compair of The DreamStation VS the ResMed S10
Well I tried to help with what I found between the two.
OK here is some important info on my reaction to these machines.
I was ALL FOR the ResMed, because I had already had to get a replacement 950 Philips as it went bad, a documented case of bad connections with the main board and its pressure/flow sensors.
AND I felt my replacement 960 was also going bad.
SO I did not want a Philips machine. I really wanted to use the S10.
BUT I had such a bad reaction to the ResMed s10 I had no other machine to try so I had to see if it would work.
And it did.
THUS my two posts/threads of what happened and my best guess WHY.
As for having NO Apneas on the S10, you HAVE to reach deep sleep for most Apneas to happen and I was unable to sleep long enough to get there, it was a false report.
Here are the reports of my sleep with the DreamStation on Encore Pro 2, not as nice as Sleepyhead BUT I and you can see how I am now sleeping better and getting real reports.

Actually, this may be true for some folks, yourself included, but some of us have apnea in ALL sleep stages.racprops wrote: . . . you HAVE to reach deep sleep for most Apneas to happen . . .
Your generalization is not universal.

easy enough to fix, takes about 5 minutes.racprops wrote:I was ALL FOR the ResMed, because I had already had to get a replacement 950 Philips as it went bad, a documented case of bad connections with the main board and its pressure/flow sensors.
nope, not true, people frequently have more apneas during REM, not deep sleep, deep sleep is a very short amount of the night, whereas rem lasts longer and longer as your sleep cycles progress.racprops wrote:, you HAVE to reach deep sleep for most Apneas to happen and I was unable to sleep long enough to get there, it was a false report.
ps, isn't encore horrible?

Not too bad, no graphics, and I had to uninstall it as I could not remember my pass word correctly to save my life...wrote it down THIS time...palerider wrote:easy enough to fix, takes about 5 minutes.racprops wrote:I was ALL FOR the ResMed, because I had already had to get a replacement 950 Philips as it went bad, a documented case of bad connections with the main board and its pressure/flow sensors.
Really?? Please show how as my old 960 is not out of warrentee and I would like it to be fixed as a backup/travel machine.

Sorry your right...I knew it WAS part of the total sleep cycle..just forgot which part, none the less I was not reaching it.
ps, isn't encore horrible?
It beats having nothing..

Re: My Compair of The DreamStation VS the ResMed S10
I LEARNED about sleep that is not rest on a long road trip years ago.
I had gotten too tired on the trip back east (I had done 90% of the driving out and was awake 70% of the three days at a convention, something I USED to be able to do) and was in no shape for the return trip so I had to allow my co-drivers drive as I tried to get my sleep.
BUT I was so afraid of a wreak, I woke up EVERY time the Van changed speed. With a van I had a bed so was able to sleep laying down, and THOUGHT I would get good sleep as I did when I would pull into rest stop on long road trips when I was the solo driver...
We had a dead line and HAD to get my co-drivers back on time. We had planned of this trip this way.
BUT It got so bad I needed to sleep for almost all of the trip back from New York. When I tried to take my turn at the wheel I would start to day dream or start to fall asleep so I would have to pull over and have someone else drive.
When we got back I still needed a good 12+ hours of sleep in my own bed and was not right for days, and I was in my late30s early 40s at the time.
I learned that I cannot sleep in a moving Car/Van, that I was much better stopping and getting even 3/5 hours of real sleep than a couple of days of light messed up sleep.
I believe that is what happened the days I tied to use the ResMed machine, sleep without rest.

Re: My Compair of The DreamStation VS the ResMed S10
OK NOW I HATE Encore Pro 2:
I stated a new thread:
OMG Encore Pro 2 will not let me back in..this time I know I am using my correct password, as I wrote it down to be sure…the first time I thought I had forgotten the passwords…
I then uninstalled it and reinstalled it to get it working again, and when I did the new password wrote then down to be sure.
BUT I cannot get back in today I could not.
I even tried a couple of possible mistakes, like cap on the first letters, etc…Just in case I held down the caps key of something..no good..
It will not let me in!!
It is like it reset the pass word.
BUT it also no longer will use the install passwords either.
At this point the only way to get in is to uninstall it all and the reinstall and put in a new password, every time I want to use it.
Help
