Running hose over blanket from footboard (not headboard)?

Post by Zidane » Thu Mar 03, 2016 2:32 pm

For those that don't run your hose over your headboard, but rather from the foot of the bed, what is your setup? I could never get used to the CPAP hose pulling on my face, even with hooks on the wall near my headboard or other hose management devices.

I currently use the CPAP Bedside holder from CPAP.com (https://www.cpap.com/productpage/cpap-b ... older.html), and have it at the foot of my bed between my mattress and box spring. I run the hose up over my top blanket towards my pillow, and keep the hose in place using CPAP.com velcro hose holder (https://www.cpap.com/productpage/cpap-hose-clip.html).

While I have mitigate the pulling issue always experienced when running my hose over the headboard, I now have the following issues:
  • Feel the weight of the cpap hose through my blanket
When I sleep on my side, I sometimes feel the hose between my legs/knees
Hit the cpap beside holder when getting up at night
Love to hear other people's setup, again, only those using a setup not over their headboard using a hose management system!!

I don't use a hose hanger system at all. Instead, I run my hose under the covers and next to my body. The CPAP is on a low night table next to the head of the bed and I pull the hose under the covers at around my chest level. I tend to sleep on my side and I often "hug" the hose as if it were a long, skinny stuffed toy snake (Hence my BiPAP's nickname is Kaa, from the boa constrictor in the Jungle Book.) The hose is in a hose cozy since I don't like the feel of plastic. The hose does not go over my head at all; rather it comes up to my mask from the area between my arms and next to my chest.

Hugging the hose allows me to more or less move the hose with my movements in bed and it does not cause any serious problems when I turn over in bed.

You have to put the photo on a photo-sharing site like photobucket or imagur. And then link to the photo inside the post.

Interesting system you have there. I'm sure it'd take me awhile to get used to your "system" as CPAP tolerance has been very tough for me.

So because you're hugging the hose, you have no pull or slack that pulls itself out of the bed?

You have my sympathy. I had a real rough time myself adjusting to CPAP 5 years ago. Other than hose management, what other issues are you dealing with?

Running the hose under the covers seemed (and still seems) like the natural thing to do for me. The hose cozy made the feel of the hose against my skin bearable. (I really hate the feel of the plastic/silicone stuff touching me.)

Surprisingly enough, no I haven't had too many problems with the the hose getting pulled around to the point of either pulling my mask off or pulling the machine off the table.

I sleep predominantly on my left side facing the side of the bed with the nightstand that holds Kaa. I kind of pile the hose in kind of a zig-zag pattern between my chest and my right (upper) arm. (My left (lower) arm is usually under my pillow; that's how I've always slept.) My right hand usually holds the hose about 8-12 inches down from where it hooks into my mask. When I turn over, the hose is in my hand and that seems to let me control both where the hose winds up when I turn over and any excess tugging on the hose. Sometimes I do roll over on the hose when I turn back over onto my left side, but that doesn't seem to be much of an issue.

Hi Zidane,

My machine sits on my bedside table next to my bed and almost parallel to my cpap pillow. There is approximately 2-3 feet between the machine and my cpap pillow. I usually sleep with a second pillow next to me also. I run my hose behind my cpap pillow and clip it in place on my mattress with velcro hose holders that are exactly like the one you posted a link to. I have 3 - 4 velcro hose holders on my tube at the moment; this allows me to space out where I want to clip the holders on the mattress (or pillow, if you'd rather), and also to curve the hose toward my head to bring the mask around to my face. I clip a third velcro holder onto the second pillow, so I have absolutely no tugging or pulling going on no matter which position I choose to sleep in.

I chose this type of hose management mainly to lessen the chances of hose condensation happening. Like robysue, I also do not like the feel of plastic/silicone on my face at all, so I use a hose cozy on both my 6' hose and my mask hoses; hose cozies can also help reduce condensation. As far as condensation, you want to try to avoid that from happening, because you don't want to wake up with water being spit back at you from your mask or hose From what I've learned, you want to keep your machine lower than your head, if possible, and keep the hoses/ humidifier warm.

Is it possible for you to put your machine holder on the side of your bed, up near your head? Or can you somehow attach the holder to the underside of a bedside table/ dresser with maybe a hinge or L bracket? What about putting your machine under your bed (not unheard of)?

I am sending you a private message (PM). I hope you find some ideas to help
