Hybrid Masks

Post by thecpapguy! » Thu Jan 28, 2016 11:28 pm

Good night everyone! I have a question that I've seen quite a few talk about. Do you consider the Amara View FFM and Dreamwear Nasal hybrid styles?

I would consider the Amara View a hybrid-type mask (I recently got one). I don't know anything about the other mask you mention. I consider a hybrid-type mask one that allows breathing CPAP air through the nose and mouth but the mask does not go over the nose. The Amara View does go over the bottom part of nose, but for me it doesn't go up the nose far enough to knock it out of the hybrid definition. Don't know if that's the "correct" definition, but that's my thinking on it.

I definitely don't consider the Dreamwear to be a hybrid mask. It has no mouth coverage.

That is where I am confused. The hybrid style has typically been applied to masks suchs as the Oracle or Amara View, but the Dreamwear seems to be something of its own. It is not a traditional nasal mask and it is not a nasal pillow style. It is somewhere between the two. Mabe a nasal pushion? Or a nasal cushillow?

i dont think the dreamwear can be considered a hybrid cause it doesnt cover the mouth at all...

I've never heard the oracle be referred to as a hybrid mask... just an 'oral' mask.

i don't see how it's possible to be confused about a mask that has only a nasal interface, but doesn't cover the nose, and doesn't cover the mouth.

if you go too far down this "something of it's own" then you have to classify the tap-pap alone, and others that have strange fitting mechanisms... but they all fit into the class of "something that fits on the nostrils" vs "something that covers the nose" vs "something that covers the mouth AND nose" vs "mouth only" vs "covers mouth with something fitting on the nostrils" (the latter of course, being a hybrid)

I definitely agree with you!! And I'll say that the Fisher and Paykel Oracle is considered an oral mask - not a hybrid (just to correct myself earlier). I still feel torn about the Dreamwear. I think that lots of people will just look at the mask itself and state the obvious. It is a nasal interface and has nothing to do with covering the mouth. So, it should just be called a nasal mask. But if you get down to it, the Dreamwear interacts very differently than a traditional nasal cushion style. I've worn it for a month and the mask seems to interact with me somewhere in between a nasal pillow and a nasal cushion. Now, given that the mask is considered a nasal cushion style due to how the pressures interact, kind of like how the manufacturer states that the full face mask hybrids are considered a full face mask - not a hybrid.

It just seems that the Dreamwear is either in a category that I don't fully understand. Or it has created a category of its own. It's just an interesting mask.

Just my thoughts whether correct or not, cant_sleep_in_nj. God bless!
