So , will I finally get sleep?

Post by redring » Thu Aug 24, 2006 12:43 am

I finally got my sleep study results back. We had some trouble with the DR office though. Seems no one had any idea what was going on. but I have an apt with the sleep study DR for the 14th of next month. Gee and I thought that I would just get an prescription and go on my happy way.
Good news is the papers say the CPAP all but took care of the problem. yay! now its just getting mine. The thing is it just dose not seem I should be so tired from what little sleep it said I actually lost. Am I just not understanding the paperwork? and what is hypoxia?

There are several stages of sleep. With sleep apneas occurring numerous times during the night, you are actually waking up that many times every night usually without being aware of it. This constant waking or near waking prevents you from getting into the deep stages of sleep that are so much restorative. You think you've been sleeping for 6, 7, 8 hours, but your body doesn't agree. That is why you are so tired during the day.

I'm not sure what hypoxia is, but there is a symbol at the top of this page that looks like a blue book with the word "CPAPodedia" under it. I bet if you look there you can find some information, or maybe look in the "CPAP FAQ" section.

Good luck with your doctor appointment. I think you would find it very helpful to spend as much time as you can reading this forum, doing word searches of past posts, etc. to learn as much as you can about this condition before your appointment so you will truly understand the lingo and what the numbers mean.

A couple of hints: Some people feel much better almost immediately upon starting therapy, but for many others it takes awhile-- a month, sometimes longer. It seems to depend, for one thing, on how long you've actually had apnea and, therefore, how much "sleep debt" you have to pay back. Another hint -- the mask is the thing!!! Get the right mask and the therapy will be much easier. Get the wrong one and you may get frustrated. Making this decision may be more important than the machine. So, pay particular attention to the many, many discussions about masks (also known as interfaces) on this forum.

And if you do get frustrated, let us know. It is amazing how much help you can get here. It might help, though, to post a little earlier in the evening when more people are on the forum (I noticed you seem to be a night owl like me!!)

Again, good luck and keep us posted.

thank you ! I found the hypoxia. I guess I have an body wide lack of oxygen because of my aptnia. ....could explain a lot. I have had aptnia as long as anyone remembers....sure as a kid but not too sure as a baby. I am 25 now. I guess I have an heck of some pay back. I have been tempted to call the dr this week and insist we get in right away. I have an sinus infection this week and am choking in my sleep. I am kind worried but its getting better now so I will just wait. this leads to another question..
my husband says I get the sinus infections more than I think. I read on the board that the masks can cause this. Will I get them more frequently??
