nasal blockage
nasal blockage
I've been using CPAP for about 3 weeks now and I've had good luck with it. I tried a few different masks and I settled on the swift fx which has been working nicely for me - except tonight I found it very difficult to breathe. After some tinkering I realized I wasn't getting any air in my right nostril- I took the mask off and realized that that entire nostril was blocked- I couldn't breathe through it at all. After sitting up for a few minutes though, I magically regained use of that nostril- so I laid down again, and within a few minutes it was blocked, and after sitting up it cleared. So this time I propped up my pillow so that there would be no pressure to my nose as my face was sitting up in the air- still I found that it got blocked after a few minutes. So I switched to my hybrid full face mask so that I can mouth breathe instead. What is going on

Re: nasal blockage
Check your humidity level. Do a search in this forum about sinus issue and humidity. You may need to go up, or may need to go down.
Tis the time of year for allergies, at least here in Texas. So maybe there is an issue for you there as well.
I flush my nose every night, take allergy meds right now, and I still (sometimes) wake up with a stuffed up nose. Just bad time of year for me.
Hopefully for you, you will figure it out.

Re: nasal blockage
What position did you lie in? If on the side, which side and which nostril was blocked?bellab wrote:After sitting up for a few minutes though, I magically regained use of that nostril- so I laid down again, and within a few minutes it was blocked
Re: nasal blockage
It was the nostril on the side I was lying, but even after I propped myself up so that there was nothing against my face/nose it still returned after laying down. I'll try adjusting the humidity, I think I had the climate control at 75 or so- I'm in the northeast, so it's winter time and very cold outside.

Re: nasal blockage
This is common. Blood flows to the "down side" due to gravity and may cause blockage. When you sit up, the blood flow normalizes.bellab wrote:It was the nostril on the side I was lying
You can experiment by switching to the other side. The first nostril may quickly become unclogged. But, slowly the other side (now the down side) may clog up.
By all means, experiment with the humidity level, but the problem can be tough to solve.bellab wrote:I'll try adjusting the humidity
It could also be that a deviated septum is having an impact.
