Eat your fruits and vegetables, but don’t bother with supplements.
We have yet more evidence that for the average person the best advice is to eat a well-rounded diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables, but extra supplements (and especially high dose supplements) are like unnecessary and even counterproductive.

... if you have cancer and you take antioxidants, your chance of developing metastases is greater. Keep in mind most solid tumor are usually present for 2-3 years before they are diagnosed, so the risk potentially exists even for those who have not yet been diagnosed with cancer.

This has alarming implications given the popularity of antioxidant supplements.

With cauliflower here at $8 a head, supplements are a lot cheaper.

Very interesting article. I have never been a fan of large amounts of supplements.

Nothing new to me in this article. My internist has been telling me this for several years. She also doesn't suggest Vit D, unless blood work shows you are seriously low.

Instead of fruit jams and jellies I like making "sea foam" for breakfast biscuits. This is where baking soda is added to heated molasses similar to making the old fashioned candy, just don't cook as long. Molasses are also delicious in muffin recipes - banana, pumpkin, zucchini - and it is good for you.

Molasses contains a number of essential minerals such as calcium, magnesium, manganese, potassium, copper, iron, phosphorous, chromium, cobalt and sodium. It is a good source of energy and carbohydrates and it contains sugars as well. In addition to this, molasses offers various vitamins such as niacin, vitamin B-6, thiamine and riboflavin. Molasses is very low in both fat content and fiber. So much better than sugar.

Hhhhmmmm I don't think my grandfather would have approved of strange men sniffing my grandma's muffin! They wouldn't have had much left to sniff with after he got through with them!

I'd never heard of this brand of molasses, supposedly out of Newfoundland? Here in the US, I usually buy mine in the fall when local firefighter and boy scouts make molasses and sell quart jars.

Also - $8 Cauliflower? Argh!

Molasses is generally only preferable (health wise) if organic as since its relatively untreated, it will continue to contain potentially significant pesticide residue from the farming.
