Switching to full face mask?
Switching to full face mask?
I'm using the P10 nasal pillows. I keep having mouth leaks. I use a chin strap (single strap) which slides off at times, but more annoyingly seems to flex somehow when I sleep on my side due to pillow pressure and I end up breathing through my mouth. It leaves me in pretty bad shape in the day. I am considering switching to a full face mask. I love the P10 though as it is not very intrusive and the prior nasal mask damaged my skin. I could help that with cream, but irritation is still on my mind for a full face mask. I was recommended to consider the simplus on another site. Anyone with similar problems? What was your solution?

After vowing I would never touch another FF mask again, I realized I had to rethink that view:) when bad nasal congestion made the elan hard to tolerate at times. I decided the Simplus was my best option after a mask fitting session and am happy with the choice. I find it to be very comfortable.
For various reasons, it is still not my full time mask but that is another post.
Give it a try and see what you think.

Thanks 49er. I plan to give it a try, but my insurance does not cover the treatment. So I need to get it right the first time around. I did that with the nasal pillows, which are great (P10), but I'm facing the mouth breathing issue. I guess I'll have to take the plunge and try out the simplus.

Our host, cpap.com lets you buy it with a 30 money back guarantee if you pay $31.28 for return insurance. Their price is $99.00.Visitor wrote:Thanks 49er. And of course, you might do comparison shopping on other sites to see if you can find a better deal. If you let cpap.com know, they will match it and in some cases, as they did with me, will provide a better deal.

Re: Switching to full face mask?
When I first started with CPAP I bought the Swift FX nasal pillows because I liked the unobtrusive nature vs a FFM. My problem with it was my mouth dropping open and air leaking out. I am not a mouth breather, my mouth would just drop open, air would leak out and wake me up. So I got a chin strap and air still leaked through my lips. So I taped my mouth shut for two nights and that helped. But I hated having my mouth taped. I also bough a mouth guard to use without tape, that helped also.
Then I bought a Airfit F10 FFM and used it for a week. After a week of using it I went back to my nasal pillows. Lo and behold I didn't open my mouth all night. And that was without using a chin strap or anything.
Moral of this story- seems my brain has trained itself to keep my mouth shut. Others have said this can happen. And it did happen for me. Now I plan to alternate between both masks. I was all set to return my Swift using my return insurance through CPAP.com. But won't bother now. Will keep both.

Re: Switching to full face mask?
I use only FFM's. Might take a look at RespCARE Hybrid FFM. A combination mouth seal/nose pillow mask. Has a much smaller mouth seal area. Also, has a chin flap to support lower jaw. Don't need a chin strap. Link in my equip list below. Good luck finding what works for you.

Re: Switching to full face mask?
I don't know if I can train to keep my mouth shut (hey, how would that sound of context?). i've been on this treatment for more than a year. It keeps happening. My chin strap only works if I strap it massively tight (not what is recommended I gather), so it will leave deep lines on my face in the morning.

Good luck with "getting it right the first time". I don't know of anyone that lucky. Try the Resmed F10. It's a very popular mask.

Re: Switching to full face mask?
I'm in just the opposite situation..I have been using a FF Quattro fo 7 years. I love it. Lately my wife has been on me to try a less intrusive mask that will not blow air on her. I went out and got the P10 that everyone is raving about. The fit seemed good, but after 3 nights of trying I'm back to my Quattro. I just couldn't keep my mouth shut (as several on this board can attest to), and even with a chinstrap, I kept exhaling through my lips. I'm not fond of taping so I guess my wife will have to put up with my "hot air".

Re: Switching to full face mask?
Oh, I get it.
In that case, do you get leaks sleeping on your side? That would be my main concern. Right now the chin strap (because of pillow pressure while sleeping on side) loosens and I get leaks. I am concerned I might get the same issues because I always sleep on the side. This mask though looks like a perfect solution otherwise for someone switching from nasal pillows which work great from me.

Re: Switching to full face mask?
chin straps cannot keep you from mouth breathing... clench your jaws, open your lips, and breath, teeth ain't airtight.Visitor wrote:I don't know if I can train to keep my mouth shut (hey, how would that sound of context?). i've been on this treatment for more than a year. there's some people here that put an athletic sweatband over their lips to encourage their lips to stay closed.... lips can be airtight.
