Resmed Airsense 10 question

Post by WendyLove » Fri Jan 08, 2016 8:19 pm

Hello, I'm glad to see there are other 'pappers that care and want to get the best sleep possible. I love papping so much I encouraged my sister to go, and now we trash talk each other's machines and compare notes. Here's my issue!
I upgraded from an old Respironics machine with Quattro full mask to the Airsense with the Air mask. I'm mostly satisfied, but me and the humidity levels are not getting along at all. I find it super drying- I've tried auto, I've cranked the level up, lowered the temp, raised the temp, and I'm still dreaming of deserts. I've pretty much mouth breathed my whole life, and with my old Quattro mask I'd be more prone to rainouts than the other way, which rarely happened once I acclimated. Most of the posts that I've seen actually complain about too much water. My humidifier gets filled every night and when I get up, it's empty or close to, so I can see it's working. But I'm dying here. I just want to make sure there's not something super obvious I should be doing. (For what it's worth, the PAP manual and mask manual refer to the other book for this issue, no lie. Way to be, Resmed.)

Do you have the "real" manual?
https://sleep.tnet.com/home/files/resme ... -guide.pdf

Now that winter is here and the ambient humidity with the furnace being on is so much drier I am pretty much using up all my water each night also with just 7 to 8 hours of use.

If maximum humidity setting isn't helping the dry mouth enough there really isn't much we can do except perhaps add more moisture to the bedroom in the form of a room humidifier or else use one of the products out there that is promoted to help with dry mouth.
It's the mouth breathing that is likely the culprit and some people for various reasons just will have their mouths dry out worse than others even at maximum humidity. These humidifiers weren't really designed to rehydrate the mouth...they were designed to help moisturize the nasal cavity and it's a lot smaller than the oral cavity. Gotta keep the mouth closed and limit the mouth breathing if possible so the mouth doesn't dry out so much.

Of course some meds will also make dry mouth worse..take a look at your meds to see if it's possible that meds are adding to the problem. Especially the meds for allergy and nasal congestion issues.

About the best you can do is set the humidity setting to maximum and the hose air temp to whatever is comfortable for you and prevents condensation....and/or add one of those products like the Biotene products or there is also a product made by Ora gel that people here are saying helps a lot. I forget what it's called.

I'm on three different medications that have dry mouth as a side effect. Yeesh. I'm off to the store tomorrow to look for the Orajel stuff and go from there.
Thanks for your advice! Reading the clinical manual was worth it for how to get the full menu alone. I knew this model had Smart Start- my old model from 2008 did, c'mon- but the lack of how to activate it was annoying.
