Feeling terrible and any ideas appreciated

Post by britinjapan » Thu Jan 07, 2016 3:13 pm

I`ve been on CPAP since 2011, and quite happy and settled with the results.

I went on holiday in December and my machine fell from the bedside table to the carpeted floor between the table and the bed. I cant say it caused any mechanical damage, but there seems to be some issues occasionally with the LCD panel.

Since coming back home I have felt the machine is less `interactive` and I feel terrible - it feel different and tired.

I put a post a few weeks ago about `How long does a CPAP machine last`, as I thought the machine might be damaged/worn out, but I was reassured that either the machine still works, or would really seize up.

My sleepyheads data shows nothing unusual, and the machine pressure and other data seem that things are working usually.

But I`m feeling terrible...

Could it be something else? Mask? Anything else?

What I do feel is that when I wake up (2-3 times a night) the machine is putting out much less pressure than in the past. Before I was interactively breathing in and out when I wake up, but now I feel the pressure is much lower, and its like I@m pushing air in and out rather than he machine doing the work.

Also, in the past (and not sure if this is scientific) I would stop breathing just to test the machines response and it blowed strongly a bit of air. If I do this `test` now, certainly the machine reacts, but with less power...

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

It`s possible what I`m imagining by the machine is just that - imagination, but I do feel something has changed...

Thanks!

Did you check the output pressure like I suggested?
I believe I remember posting links to your thread how to do it very simply.

Go to the "Advanced search" section (above) and do a search on "homemade manometer" with "tomjax" in the line for the "Author". All you need is a bucket/container of water a ruler marked in centimeters and something to mark the hose or tape the ruler to the hose. Put the hose in the bucket of water, turn on the machine and watch for bubbles as you raise the hose to the number of centimeters on the ruler or the mark you made on the hose.
If the machine is an APAP in a range of pressures, put it in a fixed pressure before you do this.

Here's your previous thread where I posted the link to the search:

Appreciate your input Den, and I will try this at the weekend if I can get the basics together. Thanks!

It also might help if you'd update your profile with the exact machine you're using and all the settings.

you figure maybe if you keep asking the same question over and over in different threads, you'll get different answers?

cpaps don't "do the work", your lungs do, cpaps just keep your airway open so your lungs CAN do the work.

You know how it is....I`m only asking because I have an issue and bloody tired, I`m also maybe asking again in the hope of finding another view - if I bother you don't bother replying. And thanks for that great answer on who does the work - to keep the airways open it would seem the cpap does some work, but lets not even get into a fighting match, not worth it, thanks anyways

You aren't bothering anyone. Have you got a chance to try Den's suggestions? I know you've got to be exhausted, but post your results for them and maybe you can get closer to a solution. Good Luck, hope you make some progress.

Do you have a place/DME for repair. They can do a basic check up. Also, maybe some setting got changed when it got dropped and picked up again, so it needs to be set back to where it was.

no, cpaps do *NO* work. they provide a *constant* pressure. some may drop the pressure a bit so it's easier to exhale, but they do not do the work of pushing air into your lungs.

only ventilators do that. and unless you have a servo ventilator (not a cpap) then you're doing the 'work' and you always have been.

I'm sorry you don't seem to like the truth.

and if you WANT to annoy people by repeatedly posted new threads with the same question, well then, that's up to you, but it won't change the answers.
