Sudden Dramatic Worsening

Post by ArtNJ » Wed Dec 30, 2015 9:02 pm

Hi all, first time poster here. Years ago, when I tried and failed cpap, I was a member of a forum somewhere. Anyway, I have mild sleep apnea. Or at least I did. I need a nap during the day on the weekend, but generally function just fine at work during the week. About 2 weeks ago though, I replaced by sagging mattress box spring -- one of the ones with actual springs in it -- with a wooden foundation. The bed was harder. At first I thought I was having difficulty adjusting to a harder bed, but its been two weeks, and I'm just destroyed. I can take 3 naps, they dont seem to do jack, I"m yawning when I wake up in the morning and during the day at times and feel grossly overtired.

At this point, I dont know what the hell is going on exactly or what to do. Drag the old sagging boxspring out of the basement as an emergency measure, try to tough it out while I complete an adjustment to the foundation or what.

I know I need to retry cpap therapy, but if I try when I'm already in so much sleep debt I wont be safe to drive.

Thanks for any help or suggestions you can offer.

I don't think we can help you with your hard mattress...If you want help with your CPAP you need to give us more information regarding your machine, your mask, your original sleep test, your prescribed pressure and what problems you are having with your therapy.

I would suggest buying a foam topper. My son bought a new mattress (wooden foundation also) and had the same problem. It was solved with the foam topper. I am pretty sure he bought the topper in Costco.

I really don't understand that sentence. If you already have sleep debt, you need to use your CPAP to help pay it off. THEN you won't have a problem driving.

Do you still have your equipment?
Are you trying to use it?

Lots of folks (and some forum members) have quit their therapy in the past and restarted it after realizing their mistakes.

That's what we try to do.........help people use their therapy.

Ditto to the suggestion to pick up a mattress topper. When I added a thin memory foam topper it made a world of difference in comfort. And resolve your CPAP usage. It's anybody's guess, but if you had untreated sleep apnea, you could have been very near a tipping point with the consequences of non restorative sleep and the mattress change just tipped you over. At any rate, good luck with resolving things.

Thanks all, I'll buy a topper today.

I'll post my equipment model and the problems I had. The first time I tried it, it only made things worse by costing me hours of sleep every night. I learned I need to tape the mask to my face. I learned to sleep a bit with it taped on. But for whatever reason, the built in humidifier wasnt doing its job, and I work up badly dehydrated after a few hours - every time.

If you were experiencing dry mouth, it may have been from mouth-breathing. Doesn't matter what kind of mask you use, mouth-breathing will lead to dry mouth. Too much humidity MAY cause more nasal congestion and thereby cause more mouth-breathing (you have to get your air in somehow). If you were using a nasal mask, mouth-breathing will compromise or nullify your therapy.

Try using the machine while you're watching TV in a chair/recliner of something like that. It should help you get used to the machine.
