From heart attack in July to Defib implant in December

Post by n0hardmask » Mon Dec 21, 2015 5:59 am

It's been a while- not only have I been in cardiac rehab, but have done some back physical therapy trying to improve my weak back and core muscles. But all that has stopped, as Tuesday I go in for an implanted defib unit, and no rehab for a few weeks while healing. Don't need to pull out those tiny wires going to my heart.
So I "wouldn't get bored" I moved last week, which took a LOT out of me. Hopefully I'm ready to stay put a while and recuperate. Cardiac rehab did seem to help me get back some arm and leg strength, and I'm thinking about some maintenance after the few weeks of recup. One of the hardest aspects of this recuperation is not being able to ride my BMW cycle.] Maybe the lousy weather will be now and it will be nice in a few weeks?
I did take a trip by air to MN and IL to see family and stop in at Mayo Rochester for a referral on another issue. Heart MD didn't want me to go without the defib, but I didn't wait, and the weather in early Nov was decent- lucked out on that. Well, I'll sign off for now and do my errands for today.

You can walk. You can do leg exercises. Talk to your rehab person, they know all about this. They won't want you to get out of the habit of working out.

And congratulations on your recovery.

Best of luck, did the quad in 2005, and 2 stents a month before. Did the defibrillator 2006, whole thing turned out badly. No rehab heart too bad 35%.

Defibrillator installed with known defective leads, been in 9+ years, same battery, lied to from the day they installed it. Never has fired, that a good thing, can't fire maybe not so good, I'll settle for can't fire....

Hope your outcome is better, at least you still have the cycle, gave mine up, regretted it. Jim

Goofproof: Nine years ago, with bad leads from day one; sounds like the POS my MIL got.
I think they FINALLY stopped using that model.
Medtronic--I hear they also make insulin pumps--another product I plan to AVOID!

That's the brand, the bad leads were a new design, much smaller wires, easier to install, to bad the failure rate was so high. I'm past due for a battery, in a dither over letting them install one and put it back, really don't want another wire to block even more flow. If a defibrillator works 100%, the success rate is only 35% at getting to the hospital, not good odds.

To add insult to injury, the Quacks that installed it, used novacane and either didn't use enough are going to let it take effect. The pain was excessive they continued until I passed out from it. I can take pain, the nurse later told me, she had never seen anyone put thru that before.

Then the lies began, before leaving the hospital, they came in the room with their computer, and told me what they were going to do would hurt, (I knew t h ey were going to trigger the defib. The tech did it nothing happen, but his eyes got big, he did it again, same result, nothing! Then the doctor (quack),came in they went into a huddle, the tech fired it again m nothing!

They had another huddle, then the doctor said "It's Working Fine, and they sent me home". 9+ years later it's still fine, battery is still good, everything is still right with the world. I've made some bad decisions in my life, but the defib by far was the worse one. Jim

GoofProof,, so sorry to hear of your situation. KNOCK on wood, so far no bad consequences here. My unit is a St Jude one- don't know what that matters or means.

Losing riding would nearly mean for me the end of meaningful active living. It's been cold the last couple weeks in Texas, so my arthritis is keeping me from crying too much about not cycling for another week or so. But when it's warm, i intend to get out and take a ride- for both of us.
