How important is a heated hose?

Post by Cathyann » Thu Dec 17, 2015 10:56 pm

I know a humidifier has many benefits but what about a heated hose?

I live in Dallas and love my ceiling fan on high year around. Not sure if that matters much.

I'm about to buy an APAP and there's an option to add a heated hose, is it worth the extra $30??

Thanks much.

What temperature do you like to keep your bedroom at night?

We keep the ac on 76 in the summer and the heater around 72 in the winter. I'm guessing it's a good 3 degrees cooler since its full blast and puts out quite a bit of wind.

Read my Useful Links at the bottom of this post for information on which machine to buy.

Remember, it's not just the heated hose, it's also whether the humidifier or machine is capable of powering the hose. I think the ResMed S9 humidifier and A10 machines will all power a heated hose. For Philips Respironics, the newest DreamStation models will all power a heated hose. For the older PRS1 machines, there are two versions of heated humidifier. Some humidifiers will power a hose, some won't.

If you're buying though a local DME through insurance, it may or may not cost you extra for the hose. If it costs extra, prepare to be robbed way above online retail cost for a heated hose.

I thought I needed a heated hose, so I got one.
I used it one night and it is put away. The smell was horrific, which I could soak it to help clear that up.
But I went back to using my slimline, with a home made hose cover out of fleece. It is quieter and softer.

If you have the option to add it later, try it without - I heat mine in the summer and not in winter, but that's because we go to the mountains in the summer. In winter our furnace is set to 57 at night, but seldom gets that cold. I never have "icicle nose" though.

I would not want to go without my heated hose. I had a turbinate reduction and need a lot of humidity or a start having pain in my nose. I keep the temperature addy 86° and the humidity at max. Wouldn't be like that without the heated hose

Thank you everyone. The machine I plan to buy on my own (no insurance or medical supply to deal with) is the ResMed S9 AutoSet™ with H5i™ for Her CPAP Machine. It gives the option to buy a heated hose.

There are two reasons for using a heated hose:

1. The air temperature is too cold on cold nights.
2. You are getting rainout when the humidity is adjusted to a comfortable level.

For #2, the heated hose really helps with this because it will hold the humidity to the maximum possible without causing condensation in the hose.

I was told I'd really love it when I got a heated hose, but I frankly can't tell any difference. I live in Texas if that matters.

With your preferred bedroom temp you may not need the heated hose to prevent condensation...which is the primary reason for having a heated hose.
But there is another reason for having a heated hose and that is just plain air temp comfort...and again your preferred air temp may not cause you a problem.

If you preferred a much cooler nighttime bedroom temp then the chances of condensation or just hose air temp discomfort might be more of an issue.

You can always add a heated hose later and sometimes find less costly Climateline heated hoses at places like EBay.

My house is an old drafty farmhouse with minimal insulation so I couldn't get it to 70 degrees in the winter no matter how much propane I burn up so I quit trying. I turn the furnace down and use blankets...but the air is cold coming into my machine and even if I didn't have the condensation issues that go along with my preferred humidity settings...the cold air going up my nose was extremely uncomfortable. I would wake up with painful "ice cube nose" multiple times during the night...so a heated hose is a great boon for my needs but you may not be in the same situation since your house is warmer by quite a bit.

There is another advantage to having the ClimateLine heated hose which may or may not end up being something that you find you need....the heated hose allows for a constant humidity % delivery system instead of relying so much on the ambient room humidity and the fiddling around with the settings to keep the nose happy. Again...this is something that can be addressed later if the need arises.

I use my heated hose year round because my nose likes a set amount of moisture and doesn't like it when I try to fiddle with it and try to allow for ambient room humidity changes...so my humidity is constant but I just vary the hose air temp with the heated hose...cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter when the bedroom is much cooler.

I tried using a regular hose one January night.
I woke up in the dim twilight with a cold nose.
I switched back right away.
My nose never really feels warm, per se, but it beats the chilly nose.

When you purchase a new machine buy one with all the bell and whistles is my recommendation because if options are not liked they can be turned off.
I like my climate hose on my new A10 auto cpap, Alberta Canada has very very.. dry cold climate..
MFG's are making all beautiful equipment nowadays and with the powerful US dollar you will get a bargain is my guess.

Hi everyone, thanks for replying. I ordered the S9 Auto and went ahead and got the heated hose because I don't care much for a chilly nose.

It should be here Weds. I'll try and sort the software out and start posting.

Do you travel? If so you might find that you are in places where the temperature is much colder.
Having a heated hose helps keep condensation to a minimum. Nothing is worse than water spilling into your nose at 2am.

My $0.02 worth of advice.
