Periodic Breathing
Periodic Breathing
I have a question for you good folks in the know. I have been on APAP for three days now. Last nite was the first nite I managed to sleep all nite with the system on me although I slept feeling exactly like I did without CPAP. Waking every two hours and feeling lousy when I got up. I loaded the data into Sleepy head and I saw several episodes of CSR. Total time on the bottom graph by pressures was 3.80 minutes at 10cm, which us my max pressure (6-10). CA, which I assume to be Centrals, were zero. My AHI during the max pressure times was 10.44. My AHI for the nite was 5.71 (Prob an inaccurate reading cuz I wore the mask for several hours watching TV to get used to it). Is this something to be concerned about. (Im a worrywart anyway)..

Re: Periodic Breathing
You may want to consider raising your top pressure to 15. If you max out at your max pressure you may need a little higher pressure.
Once you figure out the best max pressure you can look at your min pressure and you may need to raise that a little as well.
One thing at a time so start with addressing the max pressure.

Re: Periodic Breathing
If you are starting at 6.. That maybe to low to start with. 6 is like nothing at all.. That maybe the reason for the periodic breathing.BrandyMB wrote:I have a question for you good folks in the know. I have been on APAP for three days now. The machine changing pressures maybe disturbing your sleep and waking you up. If you are spend a lot of time at 10.
I would change the adjust pressures to like 9 and 11 to see how the pressure graphs and AHI do for a few days. Some times narrowing the pressure is less disturbing
and will lead to better sleep.
If your AHI is 5.7 it is a bit to high.. You need to be below 5. You can do better I am sure of it.
I wish you well...

Re: Periodic Breathing
When we spend a lot of time using the mask and machine while awake we have to realize that the data given may be skewed with awake/semi awake breathing irregularities getting flagged and they shouldn't be considered when evaluating the results.
It's quite possible that the bulk of your CSR/PB flagged breathing is related to awake breathing irregularities.
Since it is a known factor that you aren't sleeping soundly there's a good chance that what you may be seeing are just awake/semi awake stuff getting flagged by mistake.
They took your almost 4 minutes at 10 cm and extrapolated what happened in those 4 minutes to what MIGHT have happened if all things had stayed the same for 60 minutes.
For now I would concentrate on just sleeping more soundly so we can reduce the chance of awake breathing getting flagged by mistake so that we can concentrate on what really is happening while asleep.
Waking often during the night for whatever reason is going to just trash how you feel the next day no matter how good or bad the numbers might be.
When you have a more solid block of sleep to be evaluated could you post the detailed graph so we can see what you are seeing? You may or may not need a change in pressure.

Short periods of time in PB/CSR aren't that big of a deal especially if you aren't seeing any centrals during that time frame. Periodic Breathing is just a breathing pattern that shows a waxing and waning effect that lasts for at least 2 minutes. True Cheyne Stokes Respiration is just one type of Periodic Breathing and not the only type of PB. Again, often awake breathing can be irregular and fool the machine into thinking it is PB and while it meets the criteria to earn a flag, awake breathing doesn't count in the evaluation process.

Disregard that Minutes at Pressure graph on the bottom for the time being. It's a work in progress and due to the way Respironics extrapolates the AHI it can look worse than it really is. Your elevated AHI at max pressure has more to do with the short time frame it is based on than really what happened.Bill44133 wrote:Total time on the bottom graph by pressures was 3.80 minutes at 10cm, which us my max pressure (6-10).
