New user, noise issues.

Post by Michelle-OH » Mon Dec 07, 2015 1:58 pm

Hello, thanks for any answers/help you can give. Got my machine, a Luna and a Swift Fx. last Tuesday. Hated the head gear, so I went back and got the Bella straps. Happier now that I don't feel claustrophobic because of the headgear, but now I am noticing the noise more. I guess it's the mask? Every breath in/out is so loud and making me crazy. My setting is only 8, cannot imagine how loud it could be if my setting were higher. I sleep on my side, so there is a lot of air blowing out on my arm and that is annoying. I have slept with a sound machine for years because I'm just a light sleeper in general, so know that even with that, the sound is still driving me crazy. I feel like such a whiner, but I have just got to get some sleep. So jealous of my friends who started with cpaps with no problems and feel like new men/women on waking from day 1. Glad to have found this board, so I know they are not typical and I am not the only one who is being driven crazy in getting used to this new machine and mask regimen. So, if you can tell me of any quieter masks, PLEASE do! Thanks much.

That's totally common... you'll get used to it. Meanwhile, turn on a fan for white noise or use your computer/cellphone to generate white noise. Also: I like these little twenty dollar units for sound generation.

Earplugs are tricky - sometimes they seem to increase the noise and other times they muffle the noise. You can't tell till you try them out. You might try them for awhile with a sound generator till you can adapt to the sound. I know you used to use sound generators but it's worth a try again IMO. Don't cover your machine with a blanket or such... it needs to breathe just like you. If your only problems are with the noise and you're sleeping solo, then you'll have gotten off easy.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

I only see one review on cpap.com and that person also thought the Luna was noisy. Try putting the machine on the floor or in a drawer. The air blowing on your arm is the exhaust from the mask...that must be there. Try sleeping in a different position so your arm does not come in contact with the exhaust. All masks have ports to release CO2.

So the noise could be either the machine or that mask. I am currently sleeping with my sound machine. I will try putting Luna on the floor tonight! Thanks!

I don't know about putting the machine on the floor - catches more dust bunnies. Placing it just below the top of the mattress reduces noise significantly. Putting a thick mouse pad underneath the machine also helps. Use a pad that helps stop the machine from sliding off the nightstand.

If your CPAP tubing is placed near your ears, noise is increased. Move it if possible.

A hose cover on the tubing also helps reduce noise. You can make one or buy one - https://www.cpap.com/productpage/snuggl ... cover.html

You can also put the machine on a mouse pad to see if that helps. Sometimes it is just our breathing we hear and become used to the sound. As far as the air on your arm, the Swift FX does have venting that can be deflected off the bedding or our arm and it bothers some. You might want to look at the AirFit P10. It has minimal headgear (one strap) and very quiet vents.

Wear an old sock on your arm, maybe with the foot cut out...

Thanks OkeyDoky, I read that the Airfit P10 was quieter. Not so into the headgear, but am probably going to thy this next.

Right now Hubby has the AirFit P10 nasal pillows and I'm using Swift FX. My mask is both noisier AND breezier than his.

I'm trying the P10 next time I get a new headgear.

I saw that mask and was deciding between the 2, I think I will try it instead since I'm still in my 30 day trial. Thanks!

Sometimes you just have to decide what you can stand. As for noise, a number of people suggested white noise. If you have a phone or Itouch, there are apps that have a large number of white noise choices. Helps me with the tinnitus from which I cannot escape. I find the 'darth vadar' sound actually very relaxing, but accept that others do not. The only disadvantage with using regular white noise is that you always have to have it or you have trouble sleeping. That's why I appreciate having an Itouch - I can take it with me on those rare occasions when I'm away from home at night.

+100 to the old mouse pad!
A couple layers of spongy shelf liner might help if no mouse pad can be found.
If a wooden shelf or table top is in direct contact with the machine,
it can capture and amplify sound, like the body of a guitar.
Acoustically, it is a good thing, unless the sound is not a good one.

I agree with this wholeheartedly! I use bluetooth SleepPhones and have an app that has every "sleep" noise in the book. I, too, could not stand the sound of my own breathing, and I found that ear plugs were uncomfortable. You'll find the right mix for you ... good luck!

Putting the machine lower than the bedside table is helpful in rainout issues as well as noise. I bought one of those small plastic stools such as a kid might use to brush teeth or you might use to get something from a high cupboard. Under $20 and at most hardware and box stores. It is just the right size to hold a pap machine and is about 10 inches or so off the floor.

As for blowing on the skin, a light long sleeve shirt can deal with that.

On the noise in general - just be certain it is not caused by leaks or mouth breathing as both will reduce the quality of therapy. My husband's sounds noisy when he goes into mouth-breathing mode. (I'm working on him )

Good luck.
