Hi All, Another newbie question if I may.
I have been using my CPAP machine for 5 nights now, starting from Wednesday last week, using the wisp nasal mask issued via the NHS with my machine. I woke up on Sunday morning with the biggest bags under my eyes you can imagine. My question/s as follows:
1. Is this caused by using the nasal mask pushing my cheeks up?
2. Is it the air pressure up my nose all night?
3. Am I doing something wrong
I am coping with the CPAP therapy (just, I still have a long way to go) but not the bags under my eyes.
Any advise would really be appreciated.
Bags under my eyes
Re: Bags under my eyes
I don't think you are doing anything wrong and the bags aren't related to the pressure going up your nose.
It's likely related to the straps impeding the circulation so that fluids don't get a chance to disperse and they sort of pool in the area beneath our eyes where the skin is maybe looser and easily expanded by the fluid.
I get them sometimes if I lay on my side and the strap sort of compresses the skin and I usually have a little dent to go along with the bags. Not what I want to see in the mirror for sure.
If you look at how the strap comes across the cheek from the ears it sort of compresses the area beneath the eyes and that keeps the fluid above the strap and towards the eye in the tissues below the eye...so the bags develop.
I don't know if loosening the straps will help or not but it's worth a try. You might also look at some other mask that doesn't have the same sort of strap placement. Between the straps across the cheeks and those that are in front of the ears going vertical the Wisp is going to create a nice little "pool" for fluid to build up.
The fluid needs to be able to drain or disperse better.
Some people just have more fluid than others. That's why I can get a wrinkle line on my cheek from just a crease in the pillow case if I lay long enough on the crease.
The Swift FX Nano cushion is similar to the Wisp but the straps are different and the way they are placed might be more condusive to allowing the fluids to disperse better.
So maybe either loosening the straps so they don't constrict so much or maybe trying a different mask would help you lose the eye baggage.

Re: Bags under my eyes
Thanks again Pugsy.
I'll try loosening the straps a little tonight and keep my fingers crossed. I have just ordered my first new mask and opted for the DreamWare Nasal mask. As advised by everybody this is going to take me a while to figure out.
Thanks for the help - feeling
