Has Anyone used the F&P Opus Nasal Pillow Mask?

Post by LadyK » Tue Sep 15, 2015 2:17 pm

Has anyone here use the Fisher & PayKel Opus Nasal Pillow mask? For medical reasons I can only use nasal pillows but my nasal openings are just a little different. I have used Resmed's P10, Swift LT, and Innomed's Aloha. (Love the over-the-head design). However, all three cause one of my nostrils to stay irritated because of the shape of the pillows. I've already tried different size nasal pillows. I noticed that the Fisher & PayKel Opus uses a different shape nasal pillow so I was planning on trying it out but wanted to get some feed back from people that are familiar with the Opus.

I gave it a try years ago when I was first trying all the available (at the time) nasal pillow masks just because I liked to try stuff. I had no problem with the nasal pillows at all. I found them quite comfortable. My only problem was with the headgear as I didn't think it was quite as stable as what I was using at that time which was the Swift LT. Since I was basically happy with the Swift LT at that time I didn't spend much time trying to sort out the headgear issues.

I have to admit that back then I was a newbie and often didn't have a clue what I was doing so and I have learned a lot since then. I would probably do better with it now that I have more experience.

Now whether or not those nasal pillows will suit your needs...I don't know but it is a very comfortable mask in general and the nasal pillows are constructed a little differently so they might suit you better.
You know that old saying...YMMV

Thanks for the reply Pugsy. Sounds like it's definitely worth a try. Next month when it is time to replace my full headgear. I'll get my DME company to order one for me. Six months with an irritated nostril has been a drag. Kinda wish I could find an over-the-head type nasal mask with the new nasal cradle Respironics has come out with. So far it does not exist.

There used to be a cradle type but I think it was discontinued about the time I started therapy.

I did try the nasal pillow part but never the cradle cushion part. I hated the headgear anyway.

Have you seen the pictures of Respironics new mask which hasn't been released yet...called DreamWear

It uses a cradle cushion. I plan on trying it once it becomes available. Just looks too interesting for me to pass up.

The new DreamWear looks very interesting! I like the over-the-head design (check). Pillow design (check). I'm an active side sleeper. Wonder what the air filled tubes would feel like while sleeping on your side? That would be my biggest concern. Thanks for the heads up Pugsy. Very, very interesting. I'll definitely keep my eyes open for this one.

The DreamWear does look interesting and as far as those side things once they get air in them...that part doesn't really bother me all that much or at least I don't think it would.
Back when I was doing all my experimenting in 2009 I tried the nasal aire II prong mask.
https://www.cpap.com/productpage/innome ... e-kit.html
Which also had air going through the side/cheek things and I am sure that the silicone that was used back then wasn't nearly as pliable as what is being used today in the DreamWeaver and I didn't have a problem with the side/cheek things on the Nasal Aire II mask and I am primarily a side sleeper.
I actually kinda liked it but I ended up being an in between size on the prongs and one size was just a tiny bit too small (they had to inflate to seal) so the leaks would wake me up and the next size was too big when inflated and hurt like a SOB.

So given the improvements in general in the pliability of the silicone on all these new masks...even the old one was doable so I just imagine that the air in those side things isn't going to be that big of an issue.
If my nostrils had been a little smaller or they had offered a next size that wasn't too snug I probably would have used that Nasal Aire II. All that side stuff and even the stuff hanging down sort of disappeared when asleep. I know it looked weird but it was surprisingly comfortable except for the problem with the prong size.

I will for sure be trying this new DreamWear mask. Not that I am unhappy with what I am using but I figure if something looks interesting it's worth a try.
I also realize that there's going to be lovers and haters of this new mask too. It's just the way it is for all masks.

You know, I had wondered about the Nasal Aire II also. I was scared about the side thing with that mask also. Good to know that the air filled side tubes were not that big of a deal. From What I can tell the side air tubes look even smaller on the DeamWear. Anyway, I'm just thrilled that I met someone on this forum that likes to try and experiment with new things. Sounds like your a wealth of info. I sent Phillips Respironics a message inquiring when the DreamWear Mask/System was going to be available in the US. If you don't already know, I'll let you know what they tell me. Thanks again Pugsy. If you don't mind, when/if I have other questions, I'll look you up.
Thanks again!
