Cleaning used machine

Post by Jangles » Sun Sep 06, 2015 8:35 pm

I bought a used PR System One 550p for a second room/travel. 2.5 hours on it. Machine arrived with a bit of water still in the chamber. Inside of humidifier and underside of the humidifier lid have lots of water deposits.

I bought new tubing, mask, water chamber, air filter, and all replaceable rubber seals inside the humidifier. So only the humidifier and main unit need cleaning.

What is the best way to clean/disinfect it for safe use?

Owner's manual says mild detergent, 70% isopropyl alcohol or DisCide Wipes. Secondwindcpap says 50/50 water and vinegar. My sleep clinic says mild soap. I do have a lung condition (bronchiectasis) so not sure about using vinegar...

I'm inclined to just use Johnson's baby shampoo and water to avoid the vinegar.

now from reading mollete posts on CPAP Basics,

search.php?keywords=%22CPAP+Basics+-+%2 ... mit=Search

19 - Cleaning and Disinfecting
viewtopic.php?f=1&t=89348&hilit=+CPAP+Basics+re%3A
he/she says not to use Vinegar

Cautions
•Do not use solutions containing vinegar, bleach, chlorine, alcohol, aromatics, moisturisers, antibacterial agents or scented oils to clean any part of the system or air tubing. These solutions may cause damage and reduce the life of the product
so not sure what to tell u BUT look at his/her thread and maybe you can figure something out

Have you tried it to make sure that it works? I'd be a little concerned that somebody shipped it with some water still in it.

Other than changing the filters on the blower unit and wiping it off, cleaning the humidifier tank is about the only thing that would be "cleanable". I'd suggest soaking the HH tank in a solution of something like Dawn dishwashing liquid and see how well that does as a starter. Then, see if anything is left. Dawn is real good at that type of cleaning and lots of us on the forum use it.......when we DO getting around to cleaning our stuff.

Sounds like you have bought new and replaced just about everything we would normally wash/soak/clean with soap/water/vinegar.
You got a new water chamber so if the only concern now is the water deposit spots under the humidifier lid and maybe inside the place where the chamber sits...those should be easily removed with just a very small amount of vinegar on a soft cloth. Then rub the vinegar off with just a damp cloth.
Otherwise other than changing the filters there's nothing you can do internally and externally for the outside of the blower and humidifier you could use an alcohol wipe.

The water spots are just a little bit of mineral deposit and you won't need much vinegar to clean them off but if you are afraid to use the vinegar the spots aren't really much of a breeding ground for anything and you could just wipe with alcohol wipe again.

You can do this with the old parts you have spares for, in case you damage them.

I have taken the PRS1 water tanks and dropped them in hot water to sanitize. What I do is boil a large pot of water and turn the heat off. I then drop the parts I want to clean into the pot, put the lid on and let them sit till the water cools. Most plastic mask parts except some of "short" hoses that are part of the mask seem to survive OK. Some of the long hoses will get "crinkly" with boiling water, and should be kept to 70C temperature.

Don't put any foam or fabric parts into the hot water. Don't put anything you can't do without into the water, until you find out that it's safe. I melted one of the ResMed S9 standard tanks, so you can damage equipment.

I don't recommend this as normal cleaning, just for things like used parts. I do my normal cleaning in the dishwasher and it seems to work fine. Disassemble the mask and water tank. Don't wash the hose or foam or fabric parts.

There are links to ResMed's sanitation procedures in the Useful Links in my signature line at the bottom of this post.

It's from craigslist Wulfman, works fine. I assume the water deposits are from transporting it with water in the chamber.

Thanks Pugsy. Yep, just the water deposits inside the humidifier left to clean up and wipe down the outside, everything else is new (water chamber, rubber seals, etc)

So there's talk of Vinegar being bad for lungs from the CDC (I assume this one-time cleaning should be fine):
http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/docs/81-123/pdfs/0002.pdf

and bad for the unit from mollette's guide here (assume this applies to repeated cleaning):
viewtopic/t89348/CPAP-Basics--19--Clean ... cting.html

So Vinegar, 70% isopropyl alcohol or baby shampoo to clean up the inside of this here humidifier?

I doubt baby shampoo is going to get rid of the water deposits....

I doubt that soap of any kind will get the water spots but it won't hurt to try. It will depend if it is an ordinary water spot or mineral accumulation spot.
Soaking in vinegar is one thing...wiping with a tiny amount is another. I am talking end of finger wet on a wash cloth. Dampen the fingertip with wash cloth on it in the vinegar and wipe the area with the end of the finger/cloth. You know like you do to get a spot of dirt off a kids face with your finger.

The other parts of the machine...I always just use an alcohol swab/wipe to just wipe down the plastic areas.
Or the finger and wash cloth thing again with maybe a little antibacterial soap/water mixture.
The plastic on these machines aren't very fertile grounds for germ growth and a damp cloth will take care of any dust.

Don't spray anything onto the machine because the spray might get into the insides and that's not good on the electronics.

It takes very little to clean and/or disinfect the outside of these machines.
Use common sense and you will be fine.
