I think for most people, they don't work at all for their intended purpose.

I have had excellent results with a ResMed Sullivan chin strap. I had one prior that didn't work. With the Sullivan I can crank it down to keep my jaw from dropping and it doesn't stretch too easily (which is what I need). It was inexpensive as well from CPAP.com

I too, over the years find that I need a refresher and use it for a few days and get back in the groove.

I never had any lasting training effect-if I'm not using the Hybrid I need the chinstrap. It is "homemade" and puts the pressure where it is needed-works for me. Like Oldgearhead may end up using it with the Hybrid too-even with the chinpiece it leaks more than my 406 which went weeks without leaks when I had on the chinstrap.

Chin strap never helped me at all. My jaws would be flapping in the breeze with or without that strap. I used it with my ComfortGel and with my ComfortLite 2 and had trouble mouth breathing with both. With the Hybrid now I don't need it because it doesn't matter if my mouth is open. I just need to get used to all the air blowing on my face around my mouth and then I think I'll be good to go with the Hybrid!

I don't know how long one should be used if you decide to use one, but it does seem to work for me. I actually move the strap forward just a bit so it sits right underneath my bottom lip. This with the combination of using the Activa mask, seems to work really well. The Activa sits on my upper lip and it seesm to push my upper lip down so in essence, my two lips are being pushed together which in turn makes it harder for the air to escape my mouth.
