Anyone an F&P HC405 user? (also, mask recommendations...

I could use some guidelines/tips on adjustment... the manual is rather vague. This is the same mask I had during my study, but I didn't pay enough attention to how the tech adjusted it for me, and now that I have my own, it's obviously not setup right. I'm getting weird leaks/squealing, etc... I'm not even sure how tight the straps are supposed to be.

I have the full face, but the concept is the same, what I do is put the straps on the mask after cleaning, i put it on so it is at the loosest it can be and that all straps are even. I turn on the cpap so i am at therapy pressure and gradually tighten the straps so it is tight enough just to stop leaks

Try adjusting them lying down, that way you have a better chance to stopping the leaks.

Reading more about masks, I'm starting to wonder if this is even the mask for me. It worked great during the study -- but they wanted to measure me while sleeping on my back, and the mask worked great for that, but I normally sleep on my side and stomach... I wonder if another system may be better for me.

I have been using the F&P HC405 for my first 2 weeks on CPAP. It has been a loaner mask from my DME since they did not have an Activa in house and that is what I wanted to try. It worked OK for side sleeping, but if I turned my face to far into the pillow it would push the mask aside enough to leak. I found I needed it tightened down enough that the bridge of my nose was also tender in the morning. I therefore kept it as loose at it would go and still not leak, which was pretty tight. To adjust, all I could find to do was slowly tighten each strap until the leaks stopped. Not much to the mask to adjust except the straps.

Last night was my first night with the Activa. It is a little heavier, and a little noisier, but far more comfortable. It is set pretty loose on my face, yet it sealed well in all positions. My wife woke me up once thinking it was leaking because of how much airflow was coming out the exhalation port. She is used to the quietness of the HC405. But the mask is far more comfy if you are looking for another choice.

I am considering getting either the Aura or the CL2 to try some nasal pillows as well since I sleep mostly on my side or chest. Something else to consider.

I've got an F & P hc406, which is probably about the same. The first mask I got was the ComfortClassic by Respironics (small size.) I've been using this mask for the last 3 months, and I really like it. Its small, and not too complicated to put on. I mostly sleep on my back. but when I do turn on my side, it stays on quite well. I actually bought the one you are using, but do not like it at all - I found it to be quite heavy compared to the ComfortClassic, and more leaky. Anyways, thats my two cents worth. Best of luck to you on your therapy: since I've started, all my life changes have been positive (wife has stopped punching me in ribs at night!!!)

Steve.

if you wanna stay basic nasal mask type interface you really can't go wrong with the activa.

I started out with an HC405 (mid-may), and hated every minute of the damn thing. I got myself a Respironics Comfortgel... ahh bliss.

Well, I monkeyed around a lot more with the headgear and got it setup pretty well. Last night was the first night I left it on all night (only second night I've had the machine), I did 1/3 (approx.) of the night on my back, 1/3 on left side, and 1/3 on right side, so I'm pretty happy.

We'll see how the day goes...
