I noticed the subtitle is "the power of gut microbes to heal and protect your brain--for life".

You should recommend it to the NFL.

That book is written by Dr. Perlmutter who also wrote "Grain Brain". "Grain Brain" is loaded with misinformation, incorrect information and, I suspect much of it is lies or at best very lazy scholarship. Here is just one critique of it - http://chriskresser.com/do-carbs-kill-your-brain/

My doctor told me to ignore the book and keep using my CPAP, eating a balanced diet and staying active.

Perlmutter likes to sell books and has developed a following of foolish "true believers".

I imagine his new book, "Brain Maker", is a lot of bad science in an attempt to get attention and sell a lot of books.

As long as your "balanced" diet and lifestyle keeps you at your ideal body weight, in good health, and a well running metabolism (no insulin resistance, no thyroid issues, etc.) then good for you, keep on keeping on.

That sounds about right to me. I would call that healthy living.

I was on strong I.V. antibiotics for nearly a month in 2013 related to Lyme's Meningitis. I suspect the gut flora was reset by that. Little did I know that eating Granny Smith Apples would have turned me thin, smarter and better looking.

Is there a proper way to reestablish a healthy microbe population after extensive antibiotic treatment?

You can try some of these treatments from the woo websites - http://bfy.tw/858

Some of them may help. Science has some evidence that they do work, but it is not conclusive yet.

Personally, I would go with the less radical approaches and avoid supplements. Some ideas to try:
Include servings of lacto-fermented dairy and cultured vegetables during and after antibiotics. One tablespoon to half a cup of yogurt, kefir, kim-chi, sauerkraut, two to three times daily.

Include gelatin rich foods such as homemade meat stocks and bone broths daily along with vegetables and coconut oil after antibiotics are complete.

Avoid all refined carbohydrates and fruit juices.
And about this,

If you had read the article in the original OP, you might know there was no claim that any apple would make you lose weight. Unless, as someone pointed out, you replace that bag of Cheetos in your grocery cart with an apple.

A few spoonfuls of Metamucil a day will help keep your colon happy. Plus if you can choke that down first thing in the morning, anything else you have to face that day should be easy.

Fascinating reading. Google Nature (large biology peer reviewed magazine) and articles by Kelly Del Tredici and Heiko Braak, from the University of Ulm. Dr. Braak has maintained there is a huge correlation between gut bacteria and brain. He was pretty much considered to be a nut job in the 1980's and 1990's with some of his research. Yet, many things have turned out to be true. Pretty fascinating, and just interesting reading.

In the last month was the discovery the lymph system was also in the brain, under the skull. It was one researcher who sparked the idea of "what is this structure under the skull cap? It was always thought lymph was totally separate from the brain. The old blood-brain barrier plays a huge role in all thinking, yet there was a lymphatic node mess just sitting there.
