Waking up to popping sound
Waking up to popping sound
Every since I turned the humidity up to 5 on my CPAP I have been waking up to this popping sound like popcorn popping and finding that there is water in my hose thats kinda stuck thats causing the sound. Before when I had the humidity set lower I would wake up with my mouth so dry it would feel like a desert. Any tips on how to stop the popping sound from happening?? I really do not want to go back down on humidity but I really cant keep waking up to the popcorn sound every day either. Stuck between a rock and a hard place.
Re: Waking up to popping sound
Sheila, take a look at your equipment setup. Are your machine and humidifier at mattress height or lower, as they should be? Another technique that a good many folks here use is a hose hanger to raise the long air tube midway. Water from your humidifier can't run uphill, so it's prevented from getting to your mask. Do a search on "hose hanger" and you'll get quite a few related comments. You'll be "dry" in no time!

Re: Waking up to popping sound
Do you have the standard hose or the optional heated hose for your Airsense machine?
What you are experiencing is "Rainout" where the moisture in the air coming through your hose is condensing on the inside of the hose and collecting in the hose which will then gurgle as the air flows through the condensation.
If you don't already have the heated hose (ClimateLineAir) it would be well worth the money to order one. With the heated hose you can raise the air temp in the hose to reduce or eliminate the rainout you are experiencing. Adding a little heat to the air in the hose can allow you to increase the humidity level of your cpap air without allowing the condensation to occour.
With the heated hose you'll have the ability to run the climate control system in Auto mode which maintains an 80 degree hose temp, or you can run it in manual and set humidity and hose temp independently to your liking.

doesn't auto maintain 80% humidity and let you set the temp to whaterver's best for your room?TangledHose wrote:With the heated hose you'll have the ability to run the climate control system in Auto mode which maintains an 80 degree hose temp, or you can run it in manual and set humidity and hose temp independently to your liking.

Re: Waking up to popping sound
what papit is trying to say is that water condenses on the inside of the hose, and of course, then it runs downhill.SheilaD wrote: Any tips on how to stop the popping sound from happening??
if you've got a dip in the hose, the water will collect there.
one easy trick to fix this is to make sure that it's uphill all the way from your machine to your mask, that way all the water that condenses in the hose just trickles back into the humidifier, for another chance to get turned to vapor and make the trip to your nose.
his suggestion of a hose hanger could be a very bad idea, because if the water is condensing on the part of the hose past the hanger, then it'll run right down into your face.
you can also get, or make, an insulating sleeve to keep the hose from getting cold,
and, as tangled says, a heated hose, which isn't hot, just warm enough to prevent the condensation, is what was invented to alleviate this problem.
search here on the forum for the term 'rainout' to learn more, there's extensive discussions about it.

Re: Waking up to popping sound
I am not familiar with your machine but will agree a heated hose helps along with equaling out your humidity between temperature setting and humidity setting. Colder room temp and hotter cpap temp will cause condemnation...rain out in the hose.

Re: Waking up to popping sound
She has the Airsense listed in her equipment profile, ResMed changed the function of the Auto climate control with the heated hose from the way the S9 worked. As you know with the S9 you can run it in Auto mode, but still be able to change the hose temp to whatever you want. On the Airsense ResMed took a step backwards and removed that convienient setup. Now with the Airsense running in Auto climate control you are stuck with the Auto humidity and hose temp that is the default for Auto......80F hose temp and I believe 85% humidity level, slightly different than the S9 setting that was 80% humidity if I remember correctly. At any rate the only way on the Airsense to control hose temp is to run the system in manual and then set humidity level and hose temp independently.palerider wrote:doesn't auto maintain 80% humidity and let you set the temp to whaterver's best for your room?TangledHose wrote:With the heated hose you'll have the ability to run the climate control system in Auto mode which maintains an 80 degree hose temp, or you can run it in manual and set humidity and hose temp independently to your liking.

Re: Waking up to popping sound
I do have a heated hose and I did change the temp on that as the air coming through was just too warm for me to fall a sleep. I will try to adjust that temp back up and see if that helps and hope I can get used to falling a sleep with that temp. My machine is even with my bed mattress on my night stand dresser. You all have been so helpful so I want to say thank you to everyone. Before I joined this group I searched and searched google for answers and was not sure I was getting the correct information. Now I am comfortable knowing that I can trust the answers given to me and not waste hours searching for answers I am not sure will even help. You all ROCK!!!!! I would be lost without you so Thank you a million times over.

Re: Waking up to popping sound
try tucking the extra hose under the covers, or buy the pillow, or lower the machine down so that there's no low spot in the hose, if the hose is all uphill from the machine, then you won't ever get the popping.. no matter how humid you set it toSheilaD wrote: My machine is even with my bed mattress on my night stand dresser.
