Question on mask leaks. What is a normal range?

Post by Patrick Bateman » Wed Jun 03, 2015 9:47 pm

I've been on my F&P Icon + for 40 days now and have yet to see any improvement. Still the same symptoms as before. (fatigue & brain fog)

When checking my statistics on the cpap, it's telling me I'm averaging 26 L/min. Is this too high? If so, what is the normal range?

If it's too high, I'm thinking this is the problem as to why I am not improving. I am a mouth breather, but I assume using a full face mask wouldn't matter if I'm breathing through my mouth.

Also, I'm using a Resmed Airfit F10 mask if that helps.

Pressure is 5.0

Thanks!

Large leak territory for the F & P Icon is 60 L/min or more.
So your leak numbers are okay and well within acceptable limits.
Now if you are having minor leaking that is causing you to wake often and disturbs your sleep....the leaks could be behind disturbed sleep and might explain lack of improvement but it is because of disturbing sleep and not because the leaks are causing ineffective therapy.

Sounds like leaks are probably well controlled but even tiny leaks that don't amount to much can disturb sleep.

Perhaps look at other suspects for not feeling the good numbers...
Hours of sleep?
Sleep fragmented with a lot of awakenings for whatever reason?
Trouble falling asleep or staying asleep.
Meds side effects?
Pain?
Other health issues?
And a big long list of other stuff that can impact how we sleep and feel.

averaging 8.2 hrs of sleep

I do wake maybe 1x a night

sometimes I do have trouble falling asleep

No pain or meds.

EDIT: my wife said she heard me snoring with my mask on the other night. I thought the air pressure and mask would eliminate this. Maybe my pressure is too low?

Snoring can mean that the airway is still trying to collapse and the pressure might be sub optimal.
Still could mean that you are having some low level arousals that you may not remember.

If you have leak data you should have the other data available. SleepyHead software should work with the machine....what does your AHI say?

If nothing else stands out as a possible suspect then maybe it is just going to take more time.

Have you had the usual labs and a complete physical lately?
Usual labs but also maybe add vitamin D levels and make sure the thyroid gets checked...and testosterone levels???
It wouldn't be impossible for there to be something else impacting how you feel that the machine can't fix.

You may just need to give it more time... but while you are giving it time (like you have a choice) that time could be spent doing some investigating looking for culprits for you not feeling as good as you want.

AHI- I'm averaging 1.7 per night. Which, from my understanding, is quite low.

Had blood work and everything done. Everything came back normal, incl thyroid.

I tried to install the USB on my mac, but it prompted me for my birthday, which I put in, but it wouldn't allow it for some reason, so I gave up on sleepyhead.

Check to see if the Vitamin D level was checked...it's not a common lab test and usually not included in the usual package of blood tests.
