Hello everyone.
I've been having some anxiety issues which was disturbing my sleep ,due to which my doctor prescribed Nervikan medicine which is basically a valerian root extract. Since then( about 10 days) I've been sleeping well. However last night I tried in vain to sleep with out taking the pill. I am now worried that I will be addicted to the drug. Can someone please share their experience or suggestions as to how to come out of this ?

Re: New to anti anxiety medicine- need advise
Anything that isn't air, water, or food, isn't natural and many times has a downside. Anything to excess can be bad.
Your doctor should have the best idea of what's good for you, sometimes, not so much, many times it years down the road before we know the true good or damage things we put in our bodies do.

My daughter is on similar medication. If the doctor has prescribed that the medicine be used "as needed", you might wait until you have largely recovered your sleep deficit, then start trying to sleep without it on weekends when you can afford to sleep in if you fail to sleep until 3 am and need to take the pill late. Don't worry about false starts. Keep trying and one night you will succeed, which will give you more confidence for weaning off the medication. However, if you are supposed to take the medication daily until your next appointment, do so. Your doctor will advise you on the best way to discontinue it when it is no longer needed. Best wishes!

Valerian (root) is a natural sedative, but in the Nervikan formulation may have other ingredients that could affect you - can you post a list of those here? If all the active stuff is really just Valerian, you shouldn't be in danger of addiction, though you may find you want to continue using it because it does the job.

If it's Valerian then it looks good for many disorders:

It's safer than 0.5 mg Alprazolam (Xanax), once daily, which I been taking for anxiety, and I can go easily without taking it. As to Nervikan I see that it causes drowsiness. The question is how many hours you need to wait (sleep) after taking it before driving?
