I've found several posts from the past that reference that encore released a free version of it's software when they first started making it available?
Is the 'free version" still available? I don't want to violate anything. I know that with computer software, if the software was originally free, then they started charging, people still distribute the 'free'version. Is that the case here?
Correct me if what I've read is wrong - I find bits and pieces on it.
Would that original freeware version (if it even exists) even work with the newer apap machines?

No longer available! At the end of last year when Respironics released the BiPAP-auto, the machine required updated software, but Respironics was apparently not able to update their software. Also, more telling, is the fact that Respironics never released an updated version for sale. Instead, they simply made it available on the website for download without restriction for a number of months. When Respironics finally updated the software for the M-series, then that version was marketed, and the version which had been updated for the BiPAP-auto became unavailable.
Anyone buying the BiPAP-auto who wanted to monitor their own therapy had no choice other than downloading the free software from Respironics.
Much speculation as to why, along with charges of piracy can be found in this forum as a result. Respironics, however, at least to my knowledge, never made any public statements about the matter.
Avoid the grief and flames. Get Encore Pro version 1.6 from CPAP.com. With the card reader, the package is somewhat cheaper than the earlier version 1.4 was.
Regards,
Bill
