Has anyone noticed over the past few years that the diameter of CPap hoses has been cut in half?

Post by Raberdash » Wed Oct 09, 2024 1:34 am

My husband started using a CPAP in 1992. The hoses were 3/4” in diameter.

When I ordered new hoses about three years ago, I noticed that the diameter had shrunk to around 1/4” in diameter.

It seems to me that this would have a direct effect upon the amount of air coming through the machine and reaching the mask. It also seems to me that this would offset the original settings: for example, were you to pour gasoline through a three-quarter inch hose, it would flow much faster with much more volume than through a one quarter inch hose.

Does anyone have an explanation for this? When I asked the CPap Supply company about this discrepancy, they flatly denied that the hoses had ever been any larger in diameter, essentially calling me a liar.

There are...and there has been for many years...2 hose sizes. There is the standard hose and the slimline hose. There is a setting in the CPAP machines for you to indicate which hose you are using,

Philips has three hose sizes. A 22mm(0.87") non-heated hose, a 15mm(0.59") heated hose, and a 12mm(0.47") heated hose. My DreamStation 2 recognizes which size hose is connected and makes adjustments to the air flow automatically.

The flow is also reduced at the mask.

1/4'? You may need a new tape measure. To my knowledge, there are no cpap air hoses with that small of a diameter.

Slimline hoses are 15mm (0.59 inches). Maybe he is talking about the short tube that comes with some masks???

Maybe, but 1/4" is pretty small to be forcing air through.

I should have gotten a more explicit answer from the manufacturer. Perhaps the newer machines are designed to work with smaller hoses to maintain the same air pressure?

The old machines work with the smaller diameter (15mm = 0.59 inches) slimline hoses.

The inside diameter of a standard CPAP hose is 19 mm (about 3/4 inch). The inside diameter of a slimline hose is 15 mm (about 6/10 inch). Hoses are not 1/4 inch (6.35 mm).

Most users prefer the slimline hose.

I wish Resmed had the 12mm ultra-flexible heated hose that Resperonics has for the DreamStation 2. The Resmed 15mm Slimline is really stiff by comparison and I ended up getting a Sleepweaver Feather weight tube extension as it was so annoying. The Resperonics 12mm is 27/64' (11.5mm) inside diameter. Still not close to 1/4".

This is the outer 'coil' diameter as a comparison. DME had sent a Sunset branded hose which was close to a 15mm and got returned for the Resperonics 12mm I use.

The packaging kinks bother me.

If you soak the kinked hose in warm/hot water and then hang it up to dry, a LOT of the kinks come out. After doing this a couple three times, all the kinks are gone from my hose.

Are you claiming that not enough air is flowing tothe mask, or the CO2 vent is not flowing as much because of a smaller diameter hose???
