Running machine with empty humidifier?

Post by ephesuscat » Sun May 24, 2020 11:28 pm

My tech said I can just run hot air to dry the hose after cleaning. I have been turning the heat to high, inserting the humidifier chamber empty and turning the auto start off to dry the hose after washing.
I recently got pink slime in the humidifier chamber, now I am thinking if I can empty the humidifier chamber and run the machine empty in the mornings to dry everything.
So, my question is, is it ok to run the humidifier chamber empty with heat to dry?
Thanks everyone!

It probably depends on how long you let it run with no water in it but I wouldn't do it myself.
Heat applied to the bottom of an empty water chamber could potentially damage the water chamber.
I know it stinks to high heaven when that plastic gets hot. Been there and done that when I have run out of water in the middle of the night because I forgot to fill the water chamber.

I can't prove it but it might even damage the seal in the water chamber if it gets too hot and then you spring a leak and get to buy a new chamber. That seal is fairly fragile and it's well known that it is easy to cause it to fail. I recently (just last weekend) had to replace the chamber due to it leaking and I have been very careful with this chamber.....no trauma to it (I have dropped a couple and they leaked) this time and I never let it run dry now. It's just fragile. So I have replaced 3 of the water chambers due to leaking. Two were my fault as I know I dropped them but this last one I have been super careful with. The hardest thing it has ever touched is my mattress when I add water....and I am extremely careful to not let it run dry and get too hot because the smell lingers for a long time and is highly annoying.

Your tech gave you bad advice (like so many things they say)

Just take the chamber *out* after the machine has done it's cooldown, rinse it, and leave it open to dry, then fill before sleep.

Would you put an empty pot on a hot stove? It's really not a problem using your hose when it is damp. If you wash it in the morning and let it drip dry,it's not a problem using it while still damp. It gets wet again as soon as you turn on your CPAP.

dry the hose after washing
What are you trying to clean out of the inside of the hose? The hose I am currently using is several years old and has never been cleaned inside. The inside doesn't get dirty.

Thank you all. I was doing this on my weekly cleanings and was a bit suspicious. I agree it shouldn’t be ok every day. I’ll empty and dry it every day.
