Technical question about Resmed S9 mask settings
Hello,
I am new to this board, but not new to CPAP. I have been on CPAP since 2008 and have always used a full face mask because I was a mouth breather. I had a badly deviated nasal septum with enlarged turbinates.
Recently, I had a septoplasty with turbinate reduction surgery. And I was cleared to go back to APAP/CPAP about a week ago. I bought the only nasal mask I am familiar with, a Resmed nasal Activa. Not the Activa LT, the original Mirage Activa. I have been using two Resmed S9 APAPs for years with a Resmed Mirage Quatro full face mask. I know the mask settings in the S9 for that mask. However, I dont know the mask setting in the Resmed S9 APAP for the older Activa nasal mask.
I know its either "Nasal" or "Nasal Ultra."
Do any folks know the mask setting for the original Resmed Mirage Activa in the S9 machines? Does it matter?
Thank you for your help.
Sincerely,
Rick

Nasal, not ultra, that was reserved for like one mask.Benicetoothers wrote: ↑Sat Aug 07, 2021 2:29 pmHello,

Re: Technical question about Resmed S9 mask settings
Thank you very much for the official Resmed chart. I thought it was the nasal setting, but was not exactly sure. You were way more helpful than my brick and mortar DME recently. They told me to put it on any setting and it would work and I knew that was not correct.

Re: Technical question about Resmed S9 mask settings
Well, the differences in the mask settings are subtle, I've measured the pressures with a dual manometer between the machine and mask, and it didn't make much more than 1cm of difference, So they're sort of correct, it doesn't make much difference.Benicetoothers wrote: ↑Sun Aug 08, 2021 2:23 pmThank you very much for the official Resmed chart. The wrong setting can keep the smartstart from turning the machine off when you take off your mask, though. When I first switched from a FFM to a nasal mask, I thought the machine had broken, because it wouldn't stop running, until I changed the mask setting.

Re: Technical question about Resmed S9 mask settings
The Mask Setting discussion has come up a few times and we'll often see commentary about it being used for subtle pressure adjustment and possibly leak calculation.palerider wrote: ↑Sun Aug 08, 2021 2:50 pmThe wrong setting can keep the smartstart from turning the machine off when you take off your mask, though. This is the first time I've seen an association between SmartStart not shutting down properly and incorrect Mask Type setting. It makes sense.
You've been holding out again, haven't you.
*EDIT*
Holy Crap, you have posted about it before.

SmartStart should turn the machine off within a few seconds.
The only time it didn't work for me was when I first switched to nasal pillows, but didn't think to change the 'mask type' to pillow. The added restriction of the pillows tricked the machine into thinking it was just a bad leak, and not a mask off... changing the settings let the machine know to compensate for the added airflow restriction that the pillow mask creates.
Now, if you're using pillows, and the machine is set right, but you've got quite low pressures, the auto-off may not work for you. You could pop the mask off of the main hose and that should do it though.
palerider wrote: ↑Tue Jul 17, 2018 1:56 pmI've got a S9, and when I first switched to the P10, first time I took the mask off, the machine didn't shut off... I was disappointed, because I love the smartstart auto on/off... then I remembered I hadn't changed the mask type... I set it to 'pillows', and since then, it's shut off within a few seconds, every time.
palerider wrote: ↑Sun Nov 20, 2016 4:08 pmthere are differing opinions on what exactly that function does, but part of what it does is set thresholds for when the machine recognizes your mask is off, and shuts down automatically if smartstart is enabled. I believe that it also affects the pressure compensation algorithm to account for the different types of masks (full face masks have lower flow resistance than pillow masks, etc). the effects are minor.
best to just set the mask type correctly.

Re: Technical question about Resmed S9 mask settings
Mask setting isn't always the reason for SmartStart not working properly. Though it is a potential reason in some instances.Dog Slobber wrote: ↑Sun Aug 08, 2021 3:29 pmThis is the first time I've seen an association between SmartStart not shutting down properly and incorrect Mask Type setting. My ResMed machines won't auto off properly with the P10 nasal pillow mask (I have tested it at 10 cm pressure and it still won't work right) and I for sure have the mask setting correct.
But they do auto off properly for the Bleep. Go figure that one.
So if someone says SmartStart auto off isn't working like it should...mask setting is first thing to try but it's not an automatic given that it is the culprit.
