The only time hard water has gone through the mask is when I clean the pieces. I use distilled water in the machine itself. I got new equipment today, so I'll slice open the old frame and see what it is.

The gunk is in the piece that Phillips calls the mask frame: that is, the piece that comes down the side of the face and connects to the cushion or pillow piece. It is on both sides of the face, but not on/in the pillow piece.
