Re: Oral devices and gag reflex

I have not experienced that at all with my oral appliance. I got mine via a sleep dentist and it was custom made. They did give me a cheap one to use before I got my real one and I found it completely useless. I am not sure what is causing your gag reflex but a good sleep dentist should be able to h...

Re: Transition off CPAP to oral appliance

It turns out that there is some precendent and an actual study that supports what I have encountered. I am a little over a month off the CPAP machine and doing well (Posted my pulse ox on my blog if interested). I should point out that I do a lot of things to support myself staying off of it as well...

Re: Transition off CPAP to oral appliance

Hi Sleep Nomad, I first read your blog about a month ago and seeing your results is encouraging. I take some vitamin D and B-complex, but not at the levels Dr Gormiak feels will help. I also don't get my D levels checked very often. If you are looking for data when you are not using CPAP, Contec ma...

Re: CPAP is a patch, not a cure...

Jay, Thanks for your feedback and pointing out that old thread. My experience mirrors yours to some degree. I followed Dr. Gominak's protocol for seven months, testing my levels as I went. I do think it helped me to get back to sleeping though I don't have any zeo or other data to prove that. Just h...

Re: Transition off CPAP to oral appliance

Sorry Tyrone!

I didn't realize that there are three versions of that mask. I was using the nasal cushion. I was never able to do it with a nuance pro nasal pillow mask. I have never used a full face mask, so I am not sure about that.

Re: CPAP is a patch, not a cure...

HoseCrusher,

I just found this thread. A year ago, I started the same vitamin D protocol. I am very interested to see how things go for you. I have been trying to find others that have done it to see if they have any improvements. It will be interesting to see your progress.

Re: Transition off CPAP to oral appliance

You could always use your machine at 4 in a few months time and see if you get any increase in apnea since your last time. Your blog is quite interesting. How much do you think your recovery can be attributed to the vitamin D protocol and how much is down to the CPAP and oral device? This is a grea...

Re: Transition off CPAP to oral appliance

Congrats on not needing CPAP anymore. Would be interesting to know what your original Sleep Study untreated AHI was. Dog Slobber, I love your name. I have a "drool monster" at home too . My original sleep study was done in 2010. I had an untreated AHI of 33/hr. They were all hyponeas. Total de...

Re: Transition off CPAP to oral appliance

D.H. I completely agree with you that once you get off your CPAP machine, you lose that security of having data. It is a big hole. The only way we currently know how our sleep apnea is doing is with CPAP machine data. That being said, if you have a sleep study that says you don't need a cpap machine...

Re: Transition off CPAP to oral appliance

Great news. What oral device was it that worked for you? My oral appliance is about five or six years old. It is a somnomed. I just looked at their website and the oral appliance looks like mine so perhaps they haven't changed much. Wonderful. I'm glad you were able to wean yourself off CPAP. You m...

Re: Transition off CPAP to oral appliance

Thanks for the friendly welcome! It does seem rare that people get off CPAP machines but it is possible! I am proof and I don't think I am special in any way. Though I have tried all sorts of crazy things to improve my sleep apnea :D. Perhaps you are right in that folks that do manage to get off the...

Transition off CPAP to oral appliance

After 9 years of using a CPAP machine and oral appliance, I have finally transitioned to just using my oral appliance. I had worked my CPAP pressure down to 4. I went to see an ENT doctor and he said he didn't think I needed the machine anymore, just the oral appliance. He said I should go get a sle...
