Re: Sleeping on the Back, Risks of Increasing Pressure

Got it, maybe there isn't any connection whatsoever to the breathing because it just happens in the brain and with the eyes. What I'm saying is that REM is a more active period of sleep, so calm, slow respiration doesn't really fit with "more active"... see? Yeah, now I read the Wikipedia article; ...

Re: Sleeping on the Back, Risks of Increasing Pressure

So perhaps a ResMed S9 VPAP Auto Bilevel Machine would be the way to go for me, as well. Or, just an autoset. OK, great! Do you think it happens while the breathing is steadiest? I'd think not, since REM is an active sleep state. (Rapid Eye Movement, and all). Got it, maybe there isn't any connecti...

Re: Sleeping on the Back, Risks of Increasing Pressure

now that I trust you completely That's scary.  I don't even trust ME "completely". I only meant that with regard to your CPAP knowledge and experience, I worded it too generally. So I can report that with a setting of min 12 max 20, no C-flex, I really felt how the airways opened u...

Re: Sleeping on the Back, Risks of Increasing Pressure

Is there some reason you don't experiment on your own? There's a chance you could take a Sleepyhead report to the doctor and gush about how well you are doing. And, throw away the list of questions. Yeah, but now that I trust you completely, that reason has gone away. I was just concerned about the...

Re: Sleeping on the Back, Risks of Increasing Pressure

So much wrong.... :sigh: When you hyperventilate, you're blowing off too much CO2, and you can get into alkalosis, because CO2 in the blood is acidic. CO2 levels and oxygen levels aren't tied to each other. You can have high, or low SpO2 and high or low PaCO2. The primary respiratory drive is drive...

Re: Sleeping on the Back, Risks of Increasing Pressure

Oxygenation has very little to do with controlling respiration... You can get put in a low oxygen environment and just fade away to nothing without really noticing you're dying. Whereas, a little too much carbon dioxide in the blood will have you panting like a dog on a hot day. Watch this guy , no...

There's really no such thing as "too much oxygen in the blood", at least not with cpap.

Now, if you were in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber, then yes.

With cpap? no.

Thanks, I will put that to my doc, too!

Re: Sleeping on the Back, Risks of Increasing Pressure

Many thanks for this clarification! I will ask my doc about both post-arousal central apneas, which don't count because I'm awake then, and show him your example of real CSR.

Re: Sleeping on the Back, Risks of Increasing Pressure

Hi all, so I had the first half night of sleep with 8-20 (the second half), and I felt quite rested, my head just felt like I have been hyperventilating a lot, and perhaps some stinging around my heart. After having watched Pugsy's videos, I finally understand the connection between too much oxygen/...

Re: Sleeping on the Back, Risks of Increasing Pressure

Hi all, thanks for your replies! I have just increased the maximum to 20 with C-Flex set to 2 and will tell you how it went. I can't really understand the doctor's reluctance to let me try a high setting for one or two nights. It's a good point that I don't actually have that many centrals. @Pugsy: ...

Sleeping on the Back, Risks of Increasing Pressure

Hi all, I'm new to CPAPtalk.com, and I've had a Philips Respironics DreamStation with a ResMed AirFit F20 L mask for about six months now. The mask fits rather well, if I fasten it tightly. In the first couple of months, I almost always slept on the side, with pretty low pressure bounds (Min 8, Max ...
