Re: End Of Rope...New Sleep Study??
I was doing a search on "spontaneous arousals" and this thread came up. Without going into full back story, I've also had the experience of low AHI but feeling seriously unrested the next day. My situation has been neither as severe nor as protracted as yours, OP. It's not an every day thing, and I ...

Re: ASV optimal settings
If this was a typical night, I'd say you're doing well. The "optimal" settings are the ones that work for you. If you're new to ASV, leave the settings as they are for a while (a few weeks) and see if they stay about the same as what you've shown us. Then, if you want to try to reduce AHI some more,...

Re: Nose Mask and Beard
I used a nasal mask for nine years, having beard and mustache the whole time. Until this past January, I didn't know there were alternatives. The nasal mask did tend to wear down the mustache in the area directly below my septum, due to nightly contact. I simply put up with this, but I didn't like i...

Re: How Many Centrals Are Too "Many"
Take a look at http://www.carolinasleepsociety.org/documents/presentations/2012_may/yenney_basics_of_asv.pdf and go to page 34, where it gives a definition of central sleep apnea: AHI>5 Centrals >50% of apneas Centrals or hypos >5/hour Symptoms of disrupted sleep Those conditions are conjunctive; th...

Re: Dazed and Confused
Also it can take time for CAs to go away if they are Pressure induced.Your body over time adjusts and you stop (EDIT: should be "OVER ventilating") ventilating. For example I have CAs, if I change my PS from 1 to 1.4, my CAs go crazy. And when I put PS back to 1, my CAs take 2 to 4 weeks to go back...

Re: Another link between high fat diets and sleep apnea
I've been around and around on these issues. It's true that some people report having trouble getting to sleep or staying asleep on a ketogenic (low-carb high fat) diet. I suspect that age and amount of time on the diet may be major variables. It takes time to achieve "keto-adaptation", the state in...

Re: What's Best Machine for Central or Complex Apnea?
OP, I have complex apnea, and I've been using the same machine you have, for a month now. I agree it's disconcerting to have it kick into a ventilator cycle while I'm still awake, but it happens every night and by now I'm used to it. In fact, I make game of trying to sync my breathing so it doesn't ...

Re: OT: Trazadone for sleep?
The only thing I've found that seems to work for us older folks (me) plagued by that early morning waking is just to go with it. Take care that all aspects of excellent sleep hygiene are being followed, watch the caffeine, get at least 30 minutes of exercise daily (I prefer early outdoors), and adj...

Re: What is your AHI average?
Since I've only had ASV for a little over a month, I'll just do my April average, which is 3.7. On APAP, before complex apnea was diagnosed/confirmed, it was 12.
Now, the majority of my AHI consists of hypos, with the occasional OA or CA sneaking through, often during SWJ.

Re: Fear of sleep or dying in your sleep
My sleep doctor firmly believed that the first month of therapy was all about adjusting that subconscious mind to the fact that it was now safe to sleep deeply and your stupid body was not going to try to commit suicide on its watch. I think you have an insightful doctor, who thinks about more than...

Re: pillows
I'm going to take a little more buckwheat hull out of mine and add some shredded foam, until I get it the way I want it. The Swift FX headgear has a semi-firm plastic head band, and the problem seems to be that the CPAP-fit pillow, even at 75% full, is still firm enough to cause the headgear to defo...

Re: pillows
I love the one I have at the bottom of my signature, which is buckwheat and shredded foam. Not as hard as plain buckwheat, just a little bit of give. It came overfilled, with a nice quilted tick and a zipper. The excess is in a bag for when it crushes down to where I need to put a little back. I ha...

Re: Anyone have weight loss solve thier apnea?
I asked my pulmonologist this question long ago, when I was first diagnosed. His answer was the same as a number of the responses in this thread. He said weight loss might result in a need for lower CPAP pressure, but it almost certainly wouldn't lead to not needing a machine at all. He pointed out,...

Re: No Distilled Water, Can Filtered Water Be Used?
I've always used tap water. When I start to see deposits, I put about a tablespoon of CLR in and flush it out thoroughly with running water. A small amount of CLR removes those deposits very quickly, and then it's just a matter of rinsing all the CLR out.

Re: ASV journey begins
I've finally got the data from my week of ASV. I'm going to post a screenshot, but I'm not quite sure what to choose. My average AHI for the week is about 4. Looking over the graphs, by far the majority of events are hypos. Centrals are pretty rare, so the ASV is definitely correcting them. On the D...
