Okay, I'm officially an idiot.

I was running a phone cord from the RS232 on the 420e to the RS232 port on the laptop. But of course, that porton the laptop is for the MODEM!

Once I ran the RS232/async cable to the actual async port, everything works.

Well, since I'm trying to go direct from the RS232 port on the 420e to the RS232 port on the Dell, I don't think it should need a driver. However, I just installed the USB-to-Serial driver and tried using the serial-to-USB cable that had worked on the Thinkpad. Same result: can't connect to the port...

Com port problem re Silverlining and Dell D630

I've recently switched laptops from a Thinkpad 42 to a Dell 630. On the Thinkpad, I used an async-to-usb cable and driver (Radio Shack) that connected through com 5 and worked without a hitch. The Dell has an async port and so I thought it should be straightforward to just run a phone cable from my ...

Independent of concerns about the sterility of your equipment, you should consider the possibility of a more mechanical effect of CPAP on your sinus situation. I mention this because after about a year on CPAP I visited my ENT guy with what turned out to be a low-grade sinus infection and reported t...

That last was from me, of course. Somehow didn't get logged in.

Snoredog: This business about "missed" CAs doesn't make a lot of sense to me, given the data I'm looking at over the past month. You seem concerned that if I set a pressure range of, say 8-15 it will mask CAs. But the data doesn't seem to indicate that. Looking across my various experimental setting...

-SWS: Again, thanks for the detailed comments. I was not intending to insinuate anything about that study's being skewed by their funding source. In fact, I hadn't noticed that connection prior to (rather quickly) forming my view of the methodologies (and I use the term loosely) employed in the stud...

Well, last night I set it to a min of 7 and a high of 10, and with IFL1 turned on. I feel like I didn't sleep at all, although I know I did for some periods. The graph shows the pressure starting at 7 and then almost immediately going up to 10 and sitting there all night. 92% of the time was spent a...

rested gal & snoredog: Thanks much for these comments. I will use these to guide some additional experimentation. I don't have quite the same problem as rested gal, though I can certainly empathize with her. About a decade ago I had farily extensive sinus surgery, which was definitely worth doing an...

Keep in mind that a really important element in discussions like this is the heated humidifier.

rested gal: Sorry about the length of this. I got a little carried away. Thanks for the additional information and how you approach things -- which seems emimently sensible. Part of my curiosity about how/why the machine does things is just that ... curiosity. Part of it is that if I understand this...

Ted:

That's exactly how I was doing it. And it did work. But somehow, I think the reservoir end got stretched a bit. So now, even when I follow the method you suggest, it still leaks without some other aid.

I can't abide a nasal mask and use an Ultra Mirage Full Face all the time. I'm on the lookout for something better, but it's hard to say with any degree of precision what "better" means since in general I'm pretty happy with it. I've tried the Hybrid and it just doesn't work for me. I think you'll d...

-SWS: Thanks for the additional advice. I keep meaning to look at the 420e online material, but just haven't managed to do it. Are you aware of any good studies that analyze these things (e.g., genuine epi or clinical studies)? I have now looked at the "Performance of Auto-adjust Nasal CPAP Devices ...

Thanks for the additional information. I started out with IFL1 on, but it seemed as though the pressure was running up constantly. So I turned it off. I'll try turning it on again, now that I have a better idea of what the pressure range should be. I was titrated in the sleep study for 7, but have d...
