I don't think I got any work done for the first three days after being diagnosed - googling and trawling through these here forums.
Now I feel like an expert!
Which means I'm just a beginner - the more you know the less you feel like an expert :p

Re: Alcohol as a sleep aid
I've had apnea for about 10-12 years, and just got diagnosed recently. I self-medicated myself with alcohol so I could sleep for a while until I realized that I could develop a problem - I wasn't dependent but I could feel it starting. I didn't know I had apnea (though I suspected), all I knew is I ...

Re: How does PAP differentiate between central and obstructive?
Thanks everyone! This gives me a lot to read into. That paper is very interesting, FOT is a pretty cool idea. It's not EXACTLY determining central vs obstructive, actually closed vs open, but the appropriate therapeutic response for a closed central is the same as an obstructive so it's a moot point...

Re: What do you call yours?
I call it "The Machine" - but only in an ominous booming voice, that's part of the name.
Once I referred to it as "The Machine", and my wife didn't know what I was talking about until I said it like the narrator in a cheezy b-movie. It stuck.

How does PAP differentiate between central and obstructive?
The subject pretty much lines it out - I can't wrap my head around how a PAP machine, which is basing everything simply on pressure, can tell the difference between an "open airway" or closed. It seems that you need outside data for that. Is there some proprietary machine learning magic sauce develo...

Ditto here, this forum and the people on it are excellent.
I've been on here for a week and almost any time I have a question I don't have to post anything since it's already answered!

Re: Real success or placebo effect
I've never met anyone with significant apnea who said being diagnosed and prescribed a CPAP machine was anything less than a lifechanging event. We do adapt easily (as we all did to lack of sleep) and this amount of energy will become the new normal. It may not amaze you as much as it does right now...

ResMed machines in China (or Europe)
Hi all, I'm about to purchase my first CPAP machine, but a major concern is how well the power supplies work in other countries. I want to get an AirSense APAP, and the specs look like it should support the extra voltage from Chinese power supply. However it's been my experience that these specs are...

Re: Newly diagnosed with >100AHI - some questions
So I would rather not turn the cellular modem on just so ResMed can make use of my statistics for their own purposes. That being said its not a huge deal either way because the only thing being transmitted is just your summary data, nothing very sensitive in that information, eh Even though I went ...

Re: Newly diagnosed with >100AHI - some questions
TangledHose: Awesome about the AirSense 10. I don't want to upload personal medical data to a third party - I understand doctors and insurance companies but to a third party seems wrong, maybe against privacy laws too. All you need is one guy with high access privileges to pull a bunch of data who ...

Newly diagnosed with >100AHI - some questions
Hi everyone! I just completed a split sleep study last night and got a call from my doctor saying that I had more than 70 apneas in 40 minutes - they had to stop it after 40 minutes because my oxygen levels were too low. Extrapolate those 40 minutes to an hour and I've got 105 AHI. I got the feeling...
