Re: Cpap AUTO vs BI PAP AUTO - Help

In my non-medical, very-much-new-to-all-of-this opinion, BiPAP is often ineffective for treating CA. This is especially true if the CA due to something other than high blood CO2 levels (hypercapnea), though it does seem to help in some of these cases. It is not always clear if CA even should be trea...

Re: I just want to sleep!

From the Resmed paper on Central Sleep Apnea Detection:
Central apneas were considered to have an open airway if cardiogenic flow was visible and a closed airway if cardiogenic
flow was not observed.
What the heck is "cardiogenic flow"? Is that shallow breathing due to heartbeat alone?

Re: How can I get plastic to make my own mask?

I have been thinking that scanning people's faces and custom 3D printing masks out of ABS might be viable for the rigid parts. It is a neat use for 3D printing. 3D printers for ABS are pretty cheap these days. The quality is not great, but is probably suitable for a mask. The soft silicone rubber se...

Re: Adjusting Leak Rate to increase CO2

To be very clear about all this, I do not advocate that anyone try DYI EERS. First, most folks with sleep apnea will not benefit from it. If you have an impaired respiratory system, the experiments that I am doing could be quite dangerous. Even if you are healthy, the experiments that I am doing sho...

Re: Benefit of an electrical adjustable bed

I have an old hospital bed that I rebuilt. It is pretty awesome. I can tilt the entire sleeping surface, raise the head sections and raise the foot section. It has an 84" mattress which is important to me since I am 6'7" (79" tall). I have pretty serious acid reflux and sleep with the bed tilted. My...

Re: Adjusting Leak Rate to increase CO2

The actual problem is low O2, not high CO2, but they are linked. Indeed. I work with liquid nitrogen and nitrogen and argon purged-clean areas. These are deadly beyond belief. The problem is that most people are not aware of the danger. The common thought is that since you can hold your breath for ...

Re: Adjusting Leak Rate to increase CO2

Well, I am still here. Here is what I tried. I took my spare unheated hose and put a couple of layers of 2" packing tape around 39cm from the mask end. The packing tape prevents the hose from compressing or bending at that point and provides structural support. I then burned two 0.125" hole through ...

Re: Adjusting Leak Rate to increase CO2

archangle - all good points. The mask mods are obvious (q-tip stub in vent hole) so no worries there. But that is an excellent point about foisting modified and potentially dangerous equipment on unsuspecting users. There is a good bit if debate if high CO2 levels will wake you up. Occasionally camp...

Re: Adjusting Leak Rate to increase CO2

well, given that most all masks vent around 20lpm @4cm (rising to around 50lpm@20cm)... I wonder if you weren't poisoning yourself with excess co2 last night. let us know if you try plugging up the other hole too. I don't think I was anywhere near the poisoning threshold. There were no other signs ...

Re: Adjusting Leak Rate

I plugged one of the two vent hole on the Nasal Aire II last night. As expected, the total leak rate dropped from about 24lmp to 12lpm compared with the previous night. My AHI also dropped from 7.05 to 0.58. My spO2 levels were about the same on both nights but there were fewer desats with the lower...

Adjusting Leak Rate to increase CO2

I recently purchased a Nasal Aire II mask. It has a much higher leak rate than the mask I was recently using, a Nuance Pro. Since moving to the Nasal Aire II, my AHI has gone up from about 0.5 to about 2, and my respiration drops down to the preset back up rate of 8BPM sometimes for up to an hour. O...

Sleepyrider, you explanation makes some sense, and I promise that I will read the link you provided when I get the chance. However: Regulated medical equipment is dispensed under a prescription to prevent unapproved equipment that might be unsafe from entering the market. It's a bit of an inconvenie...

Re: Why do we need a prescription for a face mask?

So DME's can bill you and your insurance. You shouldnt need an RX for anything but a machine in my opinion! Insurance can cover non-prescription items. Why should you even need a prescription for a machine? They have a low potential for harm by misuse. I can understand insurance requiring a doctor'...

Re: S9 ASV or Aircurve ASV?

I would really love to rent an Aircurve ASV or even an S9 ASV for a month to try it out. I like my PR960 but I do wonder if there is an even better machine out there. I have never really been happy with the auto backup rate on the PR960 and there are times when the PS seems to get 'stuck' on a relat...

Re: Updating the firmware on the PR System One machines

The PCA, Buzzer Assembly, and Buzzer Holder Assembly are now RoHS-Directive compliant.
I am not sure why that would require a firmware change. I suppose if could be a PCB revision that required a firmware change.
