Re: Giving up because of Aerophagia. Looking at Oral Appliances
I have tried three custom-fitted dental appliances from dentists. These were leading, tested appliances that each cost well over $1,000, with insurance covering a portion of the expense for two of them. The most effective of the three reduced my AHI to 7 in a home sleep test, which the dentist consi...

Re: Do I even have UARS?
I'm guessing that the collective wisdom of the experienced board members can offer some insights if you could provide more information. But in response to your question, I don't read your sleep study summary as indicating UARS. It reads to me like CSA. I have adjusted my own settings slowly over tim...

Re: Alcohol as a sleep aid
There have been several comments regarding the problems with using alcohol as a sleep aid, and it is also worth noting that alcohol is bad for sleep apnea itself (in addition to being bad for sleep) because alcohol can raise one's AHI. See, e.g., http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11153591. Just thi...

Re: Using sleeping aids to get used to CPAP first time
FWIW, my sleep doctor at Mayo Clinic prescribed me a 30-day supply of Ambien to use solely for purposes of helping to adjust to CPAP. He also prescribed sleep hygiene, and insisted that the prescription was solely to help with adjusting and would not be refilled. He stated that he doesn't want his O...

Re: how can I tell if my bispap auto sv is set correctly?
On the screen, if you click on "Info," there is a menu choice for "Device Settings," on this machine. That will tell you how the machine has been set up, at least with respect to the most basic settings.

Re: Mouth breathers. Buteyko method. Question.
I took a Buteyko workshop a few years ago, with the notion that it couldn't hurt, and could help. The workshop (which, if I recall correctly, met once a week with the instructor for a month) mostly consisted of people who have asthma. The exercises focused a lot on stopping habitual mouth breathing,...

Re: Happy 10th Birthday/Anniversary CPAPTalk!!!
As a CPAP user for over 20 years, I sincerely wish I had discovered this forum ten years ago! Over the last month I have found more practical and helpful information here than I had in my previous two decades about things to try to improve my use of CPAP. When I first started CPAP treatment, I resea...
