Wow...I am in almost same exact boat...
Went to doc for constant wakening...
Home sleep study...AHI 12...pressure is 10.0...some relief...some ambien...no leaks...AHI < 1.0 since start...use equipment every night for 8 weeks straight now...still waking frequently...

Local DME supplied unit and mask... Doctor just sent me a copy of my script... I want to buy some masks on-line. Does prescription work like glasses...as in I can buy as many as I want? I too am interested in this issue... I've just went over the first 30 days on CPAP and have had ears issues. Wake up feeling like you are listeneing to things through a pillow in my right ear. Took some decongestants and it went away in about two days...but now its back. Second time in the 30 days. ...

I just changed mine today and it was grey...
So I'd guess without it, that junk would end up in my mask and in me...

Nasal sores and humidity
I have been using my equipment almost three weeks now…my machine is still in the evaluation mode (varying pressure). Over the last two days, I have developed a sore inside my left nostril. I use a nasal mask (Mirage FX) and this sore is up inside my nose…not on the edge of the nostril but up inside....
