Re: How does CPAP work? Doesn't make sense

The topic of this thread was, and still is, "How does CPaP work? Doesn't make sense". I came on to ask how this thing works, not even needing/wanting help with apnea. I could have been a parent with a child with a OSA problem, for all of you know, I'm not, but could have been. I ask questions, get c...

Re: How does CPAP work? Doesn't make sense

I agree with K Hauser - It may be 'unconscious', but it sure feels as is you're trying to find any excuse to not use the machine, hiding that under the 'I'm an engineer, etc...". We get it, you have a prof. interest and it's enigmatic for you. But the fact is that you need to use it whether or not ...

Re: How does CPAP work? Doesn't make sense

So you need to know how it works in order to accept it? But you haven't bothered to find out what your settings are? That makes no sense. Are you using ramp? What are your settings. Your doctor hasn't used a cpap machine. She has no idea what you are feeling. You could be struggling due to pressure...

Re: How does CPAP work? Doesn't make sense

Did she read your data, make any adjustments to your pressure settings, suggest another mask, etc.? Sounds like you're having some of the usual problems that occur at the beginning. Can you post your pressure settings,Aflex/Cflex settings, name of mask, titration RX? Sometimes the right bed pillow or...

Re: How does CPAP work? Doesn't make sense

Arousals (waking up) may be caused by apneas, but it is not the only cause. Consider that mask noise, and vibration on your face may also wake you up. This why so many suggest a mask liner or a fabric mask. My Pad-a-cheek liner helped me when I was getting used to my full face mask. I'm thinking of...

Re: How does CPAP work? Doesn't make sense

Well, I have never said this was/is not for me. As an engineer, I need to understand how something works before I can accept it, whatever it is. If I can understand how it works, I can use it's principals to use it. I went to the Dr. today, she said me waking up with the mask on, is me having an apn...

Re: 17 cmH2O is how many MPH in air flow ?

What you're comparing is like comparing apples to oranges.

A anemometer measures speed, like MPH

A manometer measures pressure, and is read in inHg

Re: How does CPAP work? Doesn't make sense

49er, My apologies about suggesting the possiblity of Trolling. But Mr RPM who after leading with the term "tidal volume' which is a pretty exact physiological concept seems to be playing dumb to multiple well reasoned explanations of the mechanical concepts involved. Perhaps it is my bad, but IMO ...

Re: How does CPAP work? Doesn't make sense

Boy, a lot of conflicting info in here! Someone said that "they" had CPaP in the thirties, then someone else comes along saying that "they" did not have CPaP in the thirties. Which is it? Same person also thinks that we breathe in O2 & breathe out CO2. I myself know this is not completely true, as w...

Re: How does CPAP work? Doesn't make sense

MRRPM, as others have said, there's no question you are over-thinking this. In principle, it just isn't that complicated. CPAP works by ensuring the air pressure in your entire airway is held above ambient pressure throughout the entire breathing cycle, gently inflating your airway and preventing i...

Re: How does CPAP work? Doesn't make sense

Thinking more, If gravity is pulling our tongue/soft palate down, causing OSA, why couldn't we sleep looking down, like on a massage table?
