Re: Diabetes

My understanding is that OSD does negatively impact the ability of the body to efficiently metabolize sugar, which may lead to somewhat higher blood sugar numbers. In my non doctor view, beta cell production does impact insulin, and if the pancreas is never allowed to "rest" by good sleep cycles, it...

Re: Automatic diagnosis machine at home.

A number of HMOs, like Group Health, do the diagnosis at home with minimal gear through a DME. I was diagnosed by hooking myself up for one night, never went to a sleep clinic.

Do CPAPS decrease cardiovascular events?

Doing some research recently, I came across an article in Thorax, the International Journal of Respiratory Medicine (2006) that said there are no large, controlled trials which have examined the impact of CPAPs on strokes and heart attacks. They stated the evidence that suggests it is beneficial is ...

# Events on back vs side sleeping

Anyone have any idea what the percentage is of events sleeping on your side compared to events sleeping on your back, for the average hour in each position? I know this is highly variable for any person, and it may be only a guess, unless you have actual data from your machine or sleep study. I am t...

Re: No luck so far!!!

Hey Texas...if you get tired of using your gym headband for a chin strap ( I did try that until it loosened up too much), try a PAPCAP which is about $34 and much more comfortable. It stopped my mouth/lip puffing, although it did not make me better looking.

Re: Here I sit 5 hours later

I am not an expert, but I went through this also. Most folks assume apneas do not occur unless you are asleep. Most machines do not tell you if you were awake or asleep. You may seee a AHI of say 3.5, but you can't tell if that was in a 10 minute or 2 hour session. My docs say unless you know for su...

Re: Data on sleep apnea treatment decreasing strokes?

Thanks JD, the first two studies you cite are on people who have already had strokes, which in and of itself adds another huge risk factor of more strokes. They seem to address the rehab process. I am not able to open the other two, but I will keep trying. I appreciate your effort.

Data on sleep apnea treatment decreasing strokes?

I was reading a NIH ( US National Institute of Health) press release from April, 2010 about a study on sleep apnea and increased risk of stroke. Sleep apnea treatment reduces being tired etc, and the association of OSD and heart disease, stroke etc is clearly shown, but the press release says: " We ...

Is the PAP CAP effective for you?

I am a rookie at this and starting with Swift nasel pillow jobbie. I get lip puffs or leaks, even with a homemade chin strap ( a sweat/headband). I want to avoid going to a full face like a Quattro, as I am guessing it will be hard to adjust to. I have tried a Mirage Liberty which gouged my upper li...

so what's the deal with mouth taping?

I am a rookie at this and trying to figure out a mask. I read about mouth taping which sounds good as I am a lip puffer, I am currently trying an FX mask, with pillows and no mouth cover. I understand the DMEs don't approve of tape from a tort liability aspect and the doctors don't see 3M as a valid...

nasal pillows and seasonal allergies

I am considering which mask to get for my first one. I have spring allergies big time lasting into the fall. Are nasal pillows good or bad for that? I side sleep often and mouth opens, so I am looking at either a Quattro FX Full Face or a Mirage Liberty Full Face mask with nasal pillows. It seems th...

Auto CPAP and nasel pillow masks?

Is there any reason you cannot use nasel pillow masks and auto CPAPS? I read tha you should not...is it because the sensors are less efficient?
Thank you.
