Re: UARS or idiopathic hypersomnia
It's literally the mouthguard I use for rugby...$1 from any sports store. I just molded it with my jaw a little bit forward, where I had a hard time "making" my airway collapse. I can kind of stimulate the collapse by forming leaning my head back and breathing in. Not wearing the mouthguard with the...

Re: UARS or idiopathic hypersomnia
Wanted to come back and update this thread. I had a second sleep study which was horrible - I slept maybe 2 hours. Couldn't even get any usable data out of it. However, since the last time I updated this thread I have been using a boil and bite sports mouthguard, which has relieved my fatigue consid...

Re: Any success with OTC mouthpieces?
Thanks! I am reluctant to blow $50 - 160 bucks on a mouthpiece that doesn't work. Quite frankly I am just tired of waiting and want some relief right now.

Any success with OTC mouthpieces?
I am having a sleep study done in the next week to look for suspected UARS. I have noticed that I can "make" my throat collapse when I am laying down to simulate a RERA or apnea-like event. I have a mouthguard I use for Rugby and I stuck that in there to see if I can still "make" my throat collapse....

Re: UARS or idiopathic hypersomnia
I don't get it. Even if someone picks up your UARS, what are you going to do about it?
Why don't you start playing around with pressure settings until you find one you like - or try a dental appliance?
I guess I just don't understand your endgame.

All I know is that if you don't look out for yourself - no one will, not even your mother.

Re: UARS or idiopathic hypersomnia
Freddy,
I suspect I have UARS as well and I am not currently on any treatment. However I have been using Zyrtec and nasal irrigation (saline) before bed and I have noticed a difference as well.
Stanford seems to get great reviews from the folks on these forums.

Re: UARS or idiopathic hypersomnia
Will do. They seemed pretty open to running an auto-pap trial for a few months afterwords as well if I want to try it and nothing else comes up.SleepingUgly wrote:Good luck! Let us know what happens.

Re: UARS or idiopathic hypersomnia
I just called the sleep center and scheduled my appointment. This lab DOES score RERAs and apparently just got new equipment in June to better assess them and test for UARS.
Woohoo!

Re: UARS or idiopathic hypersomnia
. . . Dr. Krakow says he doesn't use CPAP on any of his patients anymore . . . The good doctor, Dr. K., is a brilliant man and does good work for patients who haven't been helped by more traditional methods. He can be a bit cutting edge, though. I like docs who push the envelope with their methods ...

Re: UARS or idiopathic hypersomnia
Some people snore at night, have frequent arousals or micro-arousals and are tired or sleepy in the day. They can be said to have upper airways resistance syndrome (UARS) if there are indications that resistance is high at the time of arousal, even though there is not enough reduction in ventilatio...
