Re: Down Syndrome and OSA, what to do?
This is a very difficult circumstance. If it were my child, I would call the different labs in my area and question them specifically on their experience with pediatric down syndrome patients. Perhaps the local childrens hospital neurology or pulmonology departments might have some advice about wher...

Re: Increase in DME Prices under Obama Care !
Obama Care is just the tip of the iceberg as far as rising cost go. Not only is your insurance going up it is going to provide most people with less benefits. Hang on, the biggy will be coming to you soon in the form of inflation. We are printing trillions of worthless dollars and the cost of every...

Re: heated hose
If its not a huge difference in price go with the heated hose. If it is way more expensive just make sure to put the tube under a blanket (your blanket if it won't bother you) to help it stay warm and that will lessen your rainout.

Re: what are the facts? physiology 101
Robysue let me first say that I am glad you are now on APAP. Perhaps a portion of your trouble was an inadequate pressure. Before PAP you definitely were sleep deprived and tired. That is a scientific certainty based on your sleep study. Previously your brain likely adjusted to the sleep deprivation...

Re: I'm changing sleep doctors
If someone consistently has an AHI lower than 5 but still feels tired during the day then the cause is likely not sleep disordered breathing, but one of the over 80 other possible sleep disorders that have nothing to do with sleep apnea. His physician should take the time to satisfy all questions a...

Re: I'm changing sleep doctors
An AHI under 5 is normal, especially if you are not having symptoms. The OP said he was feeling better not that he wasn't having symptoms. An AHI under 5.0 is not normal if it is causing you to not feel well. Good for the OP finding someone that possibly can help him! These practitioners that want ...

Re: what are the facts? physiology 101
Robysue as you described your hypopneas indicate reduced breathing by at least 50% with arousals. Your brain is waking you up before you have a significant desat. Of course it will likely worsen with age if untreated. What PAP is really doing for you right now is helping you stay asleep, since you d...

Re: I'm changing sleep doctors
While I believe the doc should answer all your questions I must say I agree with him. An AHI under 5 is normal, especially if you are not having symptoms. If you are getting 8 hours of sleep then the bloodshot eyes might likely be due to a mask leak blowing into your eyes. This can happen when you c...

Re: What is a sleep doctor?
Just a couple more things to consider. The doctor should be board cerfied in sleep medicine. Also, the lab should have AASM accreditation. The lab should be not just a sleep lab but a sleep center, the former simply deals with apnea the latter deals with all sleep disorders. The tech that performs t...

Re: why is less than 5 AHIs the magic number?
An AHI of 5 or less is within the normal sleep range. There are a few other physiological reasons for apneas beside obstruction. For example the normal transition from wake to sleep often results in a central apnea. This might cause an arousal to breath and of course when you go back to sleep that t...

Re: Can LOSING weight aggravate apnea?
Its difficult to know exactly how weight changes will affect you individually. As one member said in this thread his pressure needed to be increased. However, typically lower weights require lower pressures. It might be that since you've lost weight the pressure is now much more than you need. If pr...

Re: what are the facts? physiology 101
Evan Laurie is absolutely right. Lack of oxygen wreaks havoc on all your organs but especially the brain which uses 20% of the body's oxygen supply. Long term health is very much at risk! I can say that a majority of patients have some sort of arrhythmia when they come into the lab during the first ...

Re: Am I doing myself a disservice? Any Guidance appreciated
Sorry to hear about the trouble you are having. But your attitude is great and I am confident you will reach a point where you feel you are successful with PAP therapy. Don't know if this is very helpful but I think that the disservice you received was in the diagnosis of your sleep apnea. A home sl...

Re: Weird sleeping problem...am I alone?
Very likely hypnagogic jerks, or sleep starts. They are common but if they are affecting your sleep you might want to mention it to your sleep doctor. Here is a link to a nice article on it. http://www.sleepeducation.com/Disorder.aspx?id=17
