I think the introduction of an affordable, basic but effective CPAP is a good thing. The world does not end at the borders of the US of A and in large parts of the world an affordable CPAP might make the difference between a basic CPAP or no CPAP at all.

I use tap water without boiling it. I refresh the water in the humidifier tank every day and clean it once in a while. After a year the humidifier still looks as new. The tap water in my area has a relatively low mineral content though.

On my PB420e (and the box that contained it) is an inscription that reads Rx only.
(Of course, in country that completely irrelevant, different laws, but that's something else)

Re: vapor

[...] Water droplets are present in cold air humidifiers as a result of physical bashing the water against rotating fingers- actually, the other way around There are no droplets and all is VAPOR.. The heat causes a phase transition- from liquid to vapor. In a sense, the water condensed from the hos...

Small note: this only works if your apnea is related to your weight. The (false) assumption that if you have OSAS, you have to be obese is often made.
When I was diagnosed with severe OSAS, my BMI was 22.

A disadvantage of the "French" mode is the garlic smell of the air pumped through your hose, of course.

Usually a CPAP eliminates (or at least significantly reduce) snoring. Since your pressure is very low and your snoring is still waking up your wife, I think too that the pressure needs to be raised. I am not familiar with your CPAP, but I wouldn't fiddle with the altitude compensation. The best way ...

RG (and SWS), thank you for the excerpts and the additional explanation. I was also a bit puzzled by this setting and wondered why it wasn't equal to the maximum pressure setting.

Well, if you decide not use your CPAP, your life might be a lot shorter than you expected. Anyway, that is your choice.

As you noticed, e-bay refuses items that require a prescription. I cannot comment on the legality, since I am in a different country and don't even know if it is legal here.
