Re: Possible Afib & Cpap????
It's appropriate to mention that there are different types of afib. If someone is in afib all the time (persistent), an EKG will detect it. However, most people start out going in and out of afib (paroxysmal), so unless you're in afib while in the doctor's office, it won't be detected. Research has ...

Re: Possible Afib & Cpap????
jimnsc, Sleep apnea is a major reason that cardioversions fail. Once someone is treating their sleep apnea, they have a greater chance of cardioversions being a success. In addition, treating sleep apnea can help afib medications work because the sleep apnea is not negating the effect of the medicat...

Re: Possible Afib & Cpap????
Sleep apnea is a frequent cause of atrial fibrillation, and some folks find that they have less afib once they start treating their sleep apnea with CPAP (or APAP or BiPAP).

Re: What came 1st? Sleep apnea or A-Fib?
Sleep apnea came 1st, and it triggers the afib. A study done by Dr. Susan Redline at Case Western, which was published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, showed that the odds (risks) of having an abnormal heartbeat were 18 times higher immediately after an apnea episode compared t...

Re: afib and severe OSA
I'm glad that your family doctor figured it out and found the problems. I know eCardio--they are very interested in making sure that irregular heartbeats get found and diagnosed. After all, afib--if that is what it is--can lead to stroke, congestive heart failure, and even Alzheimer's disease. An el...

Re: afib and severe OSA
profoundapena, Regarding your comments below, I must respectfully disagree. You said: "There is an abundance of information online about atrial fibrillation AF afib. It's very interesting and seems to be innocuous except that it greatly increases your stroke risk. The goals of therapy are to reduce ...

Re: afib and severe OSA
Trek2020, Here are several articles that may be of interest to you regarding your questions. The first is an article we just published about the impact of sleep apnea on catheter ablations. The second is about a presentation by Dr. Riccardo Cappato to afib doctors about how catheter ablation may be ...

Re: afib and severe OSA
Trek2020, I'm sorry you're experiencing afib and sleep apnea. It's a very common combination as we're learning how sleep apnea often leads to afib, and we now know that up to half of those with afib also have sleep apnea. In addition, untreated sleep apnea is a common reason that cardioversions fail...

Re: Help - just dx'd w/ atrial fibillation
peljbl, Sorry to be late to this topic but I just found out about it today. It' s very likely that past untreated sleep apnea (or maybe your current BiPap settings are not optimal) is a possible reason that you are dealing with atrial fibrillation. Untreated sleep apnea is a very common cause of atr...
