Re: BiPAP ASV - Backup Power Question
Well, it can be noisy, but it isn't that near the house. I have a pretty big property, and the line from it goes about 300' to the garage, which is on the opposite side of the house from the bedroom. So, it does do the job. Yes, 90 MPH is a wee bit much for Arizona--kinda like a cat 1 Hurricane with...

Re: worried 142 apnea per hour
Tbone, yes, 142 apneas per hour is a lot, but xpap therapy is designed to treat exactly that. Imagine how you will feel when you're having an AHI of 5 or less, and getting real quality of sleep. My number of events was not as high as yours, but I guarantee that I felt just as crappy. So, you're taki...

Re: BiPAP ASV - Backup Power Question
Well, BB, I used to have a battery backup, with several car batteries and an auxiliary power outlet, with a line run from the garage. Since then, I have a house generator for power outages, and it does the job nicely in terms of powering critical things (obviously the xpap is a critical thing).

Re: 26-year Old Man Dies During Sleep Study
These wildly sensational posts such as "26 year Old Man Dies Suddenly During Sleep Study" do no good for this board. They are tabloid type stories, and might scare people who are otherwise committed to having their sleep apnea treated. I wish they would stop, as they're conjecture, and contribute no...

OT but related--favorite diet?
What are the diets most favored by folks around here? I don't need to lose weight, but need to maintain at current weight, and decrease overall cholesterol. I have had success with the South Beach diet, as it allows one to eat a variety of interesting foods. Comments and suggestions welcome.

Re: Nasal congestion try 1,547
Nasacort is my best friend. I don't get rebound stuffiness, as I don't use it all the time. Also, saline mist works nicely for me (generic cheap CVS brand), and I don't use a humidifier any more--haven't in a long time. If one can deal with no humidifier as a comfort option, it can prevent some cong...

Re: How low are you numbers with swift lt? Help me improve!
I have better results with the Swift II than the LT. My numbers are better (AHI around 1 as opposed to 2 with the LT), and a better quality of sleep overall. The LT does have the swivel that allows the hose to rotate, but I find the Swift II fits my nose with a better seal. In addition, the pillows ...

Re: First night - how did I do?
Pete you did extremely well for a first night. 9 hours compliance is amazing, and the sore nose is to be expected. Yes, numbers at the beginning don't mean that much, but after a while if it doesn't go down, I'd take a careful look at the hypopnea index (HI), and see if some minor adjustment can bri...

Re: How many hours should CPAP be worn per night?
He is wrong. Every apnea episode kills brain cells, causes heart stress, etc. That is more than a bit dramatic. I think all of us have had ill effects in terms of cognition, and somatic effects on the entire body. However, to say one episode of apnea kills brain cells, etc, is not scientifically su...

Re: Cognitve Functions Are Getting Worse
'm Worried! I've been on CPAP since December 2008 - +- 14 months. My original polysomnograph showed an AHI of 96. I've managed to get it down now to usually <5. The problem is that my cognitive functions are getting worse. I have this claw gripping my forehead all the time. Writing technical report...

Since this thread has gotten bumped up by the last post, I'm gonna respond now so that I won't bump it up again. You all are much too kind and complimentary. Believe me, I have pictures taken out in the bright sunlight during that same week that show every wrinkle I've happily earned in my 65 years...

Re: What happens at the first follow-up usually?
Since my first year of cpap (back in 1998), I have not had a "classic" one year follow up. I meet with my Internal Medicine doctor every 4-6 months, and we go over the data. I have normal tests (blood work for my cholesterol meds), and he asks me how I feel in/re the autopap. After a basic battery o...

Re: apap, is range too narrow
Well, it depends. I've read several posts over a few years suggesting that (generally) the narrower the range the better; and these observations came from trial and error. I think what you want to avoid is having the upper pressure spike to the point where it forces your mouth open, or your mask of...
